Wj Squeel front left after 30 mph help!

Hi I cant figure this out,

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

The whine starts at about 30mph and is continuous from that point on and does seem to stop at higher speeds. Drop under 30 and the noise cuts off. You can actually hover around 30 and make it come on and off.

It almost sounds like air passing through two pieces of rubber or plastic ?? Or something in the grill, bumper, air duct, vent or ..

I cant seem to find the issue. Does not happened at idle, revving the motor at while driving, does not seem like steering or pump, applying the brakes, turning left/right still there. It is not a grind and does not sound metallic.

I have messed around with the wheel well and plastic under the radiator and I cant seem to find the issue.

Any suggestions I am at a loss on this..

Thanks in advance!!

After doing a little research it could be the wheel bearings/hubs. I'm going to take it to a shop to confirm and if it is the wheel bearings I'm going to change them out myself. Someone has a great write up w/ pics here in the forum. I'll follow up and let you know if that was my issue.

I was thinking wheel bearings. However, I have replaced many on other cars and this noise does not seem to fit. Usually the wheel bearing make a whirling or humming sound (even a slight grinding style sound) so this is what makes me think that is it something else.

For Wheel Bearing Rock Auto has the Timkins for around ~70 each which is not bad.

Please let me know what you find and when are you going to have it looked at ???

I will post if I find the answer.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the site, should I need to purchase them! I am going tomorrow to have it checked out at a local Jeep dealership around my job. So once they diagnose, I'll tell you what they find.

i get a crazy squeal at around 20 - 30. it sounds like a dying goat or something. a really high pitched whining that seems to go with the speed of my tire... ive heard it could be an ABS sensor. but that just doesnt sound right.

This may sound weird but try lifting the park brake handle when you hear the squeal and see if it goes away. I though I had a squeal from the front when I first replaced my pads and rotors by my squeal was from the parking brake dragging. When I lifted the parking brake handle, the squeal went away. I adjusted it and it's gone now.

I tried that but no luck! I still have that horrible whistle sound starting at 20mph. I'm going to the shop today to have them diagnose this noise. I'll post what they find.

Turns out my squealing noise was a result of my front right wheel bearing/hub. They had the Jeep on the lift while the right side tires were spinning, sprayed some lubricating fluid in the direction of the right front hub and the noise died down a lot. Once I left the shop I couldn't hear the squealing noise at all. So this weekend I'll be replacing both front wheel bearing/hubs. Hope this helps!

Wow thanks for the update. I am suprised that it was the wheel bearings/hub. If it does not get worse and seem to be working, I am going to see how this goes. My intent is make it through the winter and look to see how they are in April...

If you could let me know how it is after you replace them and any wear or other signs that you see on them it would be great!!

Thanks again for the feedback.
