shock extension...DIY
I tried searching, but to no avail. If I missed it, I'm sorry. I have BDS 2 inch springs in my garage right now. However, I just purchased the Jeep a month ago and it has brand new (under 2000 miles) blistiens on all 4 corners. I want to put the springs in this weekend since I will have it apart for some other maintence stuff anyways. Heres what im thinking tho. To do just the springs, and save for new blistiens for the correct lift from Kolak. So I want to keep my current shocks for a couple of months. My thought is that if i can just make a shock extender/spacer for the shock so that i can still drive it without worry of it bottoming out.

something like this. should be able to do with scraps around the house for nothing....


My question is...would this be bad? It shouldnt change the geometry of the shock, so should be fine. Might even be able to just use this for the life of the shocks. It shouldnt limit the travel of suspension at all as in either direction I wouldnt think, would it?

Now I know I should just sell my stock ones and buy Kolaks, but i dont want too. No more money on Jeep upgrades for a while from wife because I just put too much into my pipes on my Ducati...so I have to play nice for now haha.

I have 2 choices then, leave it stock, or put springs in and make shock extenders....what are your thoughts? Safe? Smart?

if made from good quality material and welded properly not sure why it would be bad. What about the rear shocks?

Fitting shock extensions will allow full travel when uncompressed. However full compression of springs will be outside the shocks designed ranged. If you also fitted bum stop extensions it would stop the shock being over compressed.

correct, the minimum they come in is for a lifted jeep 1.5-2" in lift. Otherwise you have to go to a Bilstein HD series shock for stock springs or Up Country springs, they are yellow and blue.

And he's trying to extend them with 2 inch springs? I'm confused I'm running the bilsteins for 2 inch lift at exactly 2.75 inches and its perfect I have the bds springs with 3/4 spacers in there?

Yes. Yellow and blue. Those must be the hds then because extended they measure the same as stock. Sorry still new to platform. And I'm retarded. Haha. I do have UC springs but they sag and my hub to fender is same as my friends non-UC Laredo.

Ok yeah the 5100 are zinc coated so they have a silver coating that's why I was confused haha sorry

how many miles are on it? And are you sure it's the springs and not the insulators? While we all know springs do sag after time, but many overlook the insulators as well. Yeah I know some may say I harp about it, but after seeing what Billzcat went through and seeing what my own look like right now. Those damn bottom ones take the brunt of the abuse we put on our Jeeps.

The isolators are new too. Only about 5k on them. The jeep has 98k on it
