Think about getting an electric impact gun. It will make that job easy and also good for a lot of other jobs too. Imo, its well worth the investment if you do your own wrenching which it seems you do, and don't want to get into the expense of air.

All,

I'm suffering from a similar problem. Except I can't seem to keep the axle from spinning. Tried breaking it loose with the brakes applied and I tried using a 2x4 between a wheel stud and the ground. With a long breaker bar it lifts the car off the jackstand when I wedged the 2x4 to the ground and a stud. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
-Pat

put the wheel back on and let the weight of the vehicle hold it until you break the nut loose

1/4", really? And you should never use a torque wrench to take a nut or bolt out. It should only torque things down.

I've done countless pinion seals and axle jobs, I use my 1/2" IR impact.

Some heat had a stuck transfer case fill plug and adding heat it just came right off and a impact gun I have a dewalt 1/2 18 volt says 300 ft lbs of torque no idea if that's right but it zips lugnuts off in a snap pretty much anything and the sort of hammering action of them helps to break things loose.
There are even better electric ones now but I love mine I am pretty sick with a terminal illness so don't have much strength left and without that gun I wouldn't be able to work on my cars.
Only bad point to them I would say over air impact is size the gun is pretty big and wont fit into small spaces but its portable and has saved me again and again on stuck stuff well really everything I don't try to loosen anything anymore that it can reach.
Only thing that hurts is the price a bit expensive at first for the batteries and charger but after that you can pick up extra tools for it not to bad on price saws, drills, sawsall all kinds of stuff that make car works and home repairs much easier.
Buy impact rated sockets also regular sockets will crack most times with a impact.

Hate to point out the obvious folks, but y'all are making suggestions on a thread from 2013. I believe that the OP has found a workable solution by now.
