rotational clunk/thump from front brakes after brake work and lift install

the vehical is a 2004 jeep grand cherokee 4.0L

so i just intalled a 2inch bb lift as well as replacing my front brakes. Pads and rotors. but now, only when driving forward i get a rotational clunk/thumping noise from the front constantly as long as the brakes are being applied. and yes the clunk dose slow down with vehical speed. You can feel it underneith your feet and in the brake pedal when pressing the brakes. and it dosnt change if you go into 4wd nor dose it change if your turning the steering wheel. I re-cheaked the lug nuts, the caliper moutning bolts and caliper braket moutning bolts, even the shocks and front links (everything i took apart/removed). thier is no noises when going over bumps or if you accelorating/coasting with brakes released. Only when applying the brakes dose this happen. now i did find a loose tie rod end when inspecting everything but i dont think that has anything too do with my problem. if somewon could give me a few ideas as were too look or what to inspect i would really appriciat this since i dont feel as its safe too really drive too much like this i am very mechanicly inclined this is just one problem i have never experianced before.

dose anyone think it could be my front drive shaft? sice i installed the lift. the noise dose sound too be almost more center of the front end not so much left or right. but the driveshaft dosnt feel loose i did try and move it.

so again anyhelp would be great thanks

The drive shaft is a possibility, but I would expect to hear a noise upon any deceleration, not just braking. You could try a quick test and slow the Jeep down using the parking brake and see if you hear the noise from the front, but the best bet is to pop the Jeep back into 2wd and remove the front shaft. It's really easy, just ten 8 mm bolts. Test drive it without a front shaft and see if you hear anything.

Ok yea ill give that a try tomrow. I actully did try the hole rear e brake thing and I had another person outside of the vehical lisen and we bolth agree its indefinitly from the front area. Another thought that I just had was could I have damaged a wheel bearing or an axle shaft wile trying too hammer off the old rotors. I didn't half too hit them too hard but I did give them a couple of good hits with the hammer

Ok I just figured out what the problem was after I pulled the brakes all apart again. Nothing seemed to change nor did I find anything wrong. Well after a little bit of pondering I decided too pull out the front drive shaft for ****s and giggles. Well who would have know, the noise is now gone with the front drive shaft out of the car. So I'm gonna rebuild the drive shaft and get it re balanced. But I figured I would just let people know of what I found incase others run into a simalar problem.

I would not recommend rebuilding the front shaft, depending on the model you have, as there are many replacement options.

http://www.4xshaft.com/

Check out that site, click on the ZJ/WJ link, and let us know which of those four types of drive shafts you have.

I'd recommend getting a brand new one with U joints on both ends for less than that cost. www.carolinadriveline.com

True dat. It is cheaper to get a new one and way better built. I have used both Carolina Driveline and Tom Woods with great results. CD is the best deal going by far though.

I'm betting the driveshaft u-joint. I had a rotational noise that I chased forever.....turned out to be U-joints on the front driveshaft. You changed the angle of the u-joints with the lift. It went away because you removed it and is not stressed when the brakes are applied. This would also be the case if you removed a front axle.

It has been awhile since the original post. Has the problem been solved.

I don't understand. Why buy a whole driveshaft when cheap replacement u-joints are only $15.00 at autozone?

The repezza style does not take u-joints. Its a Grand Cherokee thing. Wrangler guys won't understand.
