Questions about engine noise

OK, 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4.0 engine, getting ready to hit 200,000 miles, on my trip home today from work. Friday morning, on the way to work staarted making noise from the engine. Almost sounds like lifter tick, or even a valve. Have not lost compression, have not lost power. Still runs great, no issues to mention. the noise will come and go, normally on start up it will click for a few minutes, but driving it will quit, and when I come to an idle it will start ticking again. Any idesa as to what it is, and how much am I looking for repair? Thanks

Sounds like a typical hydraulic lifter tick, related to low oil pressure, or age. Hard to diagnose noises without being there. Not a huge job, but take the opportunity to do all of them at the same time because if one or two are going now the others won't be far behind, they're all the same age after all.
They only cost a few $ each, so if you can do the work yourself there is only the cost of them and the gasket.

Last time I checked, pulling the head was required to change lifters on a 4.0, so not a small job, but relatively simple. I've got the same noise, but been going on for a while. Planning on an engine swap as I picked up a low miles 4.0 for a screaming deal and an engine swap isn't much more difficult.

my 4.0 has 220k and makes noises on occasion. It is not a very refined motor to begin with.

I have a 99 XJ and the 4.0 with 270,000mi on it....purrs like a kitten. No way to tell it has more than 50,000mi on it other than the odometer..IMHO one of the best powerplants produced for Jeeps.
