I hv 2004 v8 cherokee w a defective water pump and thermostat. I thought I could replace this myself, but halfway in I realized I need an impact wrench (which I'm not going to buy...I'm not mechanical and won't use it but this once) to get the pump bolts off. So, I need to drive my car about a mile to the repair joint.
Should I a.) leave the drained coolant out for that short drive or b.) refill it, not knowing if I can properly go through the bleed process bc my water pump is jacked. In case it's not obvious, I'm in over my head and just need some solid advice. Thanks.

Put water in it, or coolant if you have saved it Take it to the shop. Don't bother bleeding anything.
Now don't take this the wrong way, but, then go the GRAND Cherokee forum. There's no such thing as an 04 V8 Cherokee...unless it's a Grand.
...and why would you need an impact wrench to remove a water pump??

Honestly, with the V8, if you have pump issues and have already drained the coolant, have it towed to the shop. Unless its literally right around the corner. I wouldn't drive it at all with a bad water pump. With the problems that come with overheating the aluminum heads of the V8, dont even chance it. And for the record, there is no reason at all you should be using an impact wrench on the water pump.

Hey man, you don't need anything except for wrench to remove the water pump bolts. I did water pump and thermostat with simple hand tools. Save money and DIY!

Thanks for the help. And yes, it's a grand cherokee. Ok, so am I just being a wuss? I couldn't get the bolts to budge? What kind of wrench do I need to get it off?

So yeah, I was just being a wuss. Ok, so in the video I watched on doing this, it said I needed to be sure to put the new bolts in to ' manufacturers specifications'. Another amateur question, but how do I do that? Should I just tighten them up as I would any other bolt and call it good? Thanks again for the help.

You should be fine just making them "muscle tight", as long as the RTV is on there properly.

I'd tighten them down pretty good, but not enough to crush the gasket. You want them tight to make a good seal, like a valve cover.

Or, buy yourself a torque wrench and torque them down to 43 ft-lbs.

You can use a piece of pipe on any rachet handle for leverage to break them loose. 43 ft/lb is muscle tight when reinstalling
