question about adding roof rack

ok i know the cross bars are rated for 150 lbs. each, but can i mount a rack to the bars that run from front to back without using the cross bars??? i would like to keep it as close to the roof as possible and wasn't sure if i could mount one that way. thanks

I am sure you could mount it directly to the bars; it may involve fabbing up new mounts. You could also remove all of the factory pieces and mount flat steel stock in its place, then make and weld in metal "feet" to mount the basket to that for a more permanent solution. I have seen several jeeps on here that have done that. Good Luck.
