Question about reinstalling the timing cover on the 4.7L

I'm finally putting my motor back together and had a question for you guys about the crank seal and the timing cover.

What I was wondering is if I can install the new crank seal into the timing cover before I reinstall the cover on the engine, or do I have to do it after I install the cover back on the engine?

It seems like it would be easier to do the crank seal while the timing cover is off, but don't know if the seal would get messed up when reinstalling the timing cover or not.

Anyone have any knowledge or experience one way or the other?

Do it before. Just use a large socket and rubber mallet to drive her home. The front of the seal should sit flush with the front of the timing cover.

Note; make sure you use a socket large enough to clear the spring on the inside of the seal. If you damage that spring, or the lip it sits in, the seal is toast. For example, I use one of the sockets from my 3/4" drive set.
