Passenger Grab Handle

Hello,

Since I purchased my 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee, one of the two screws holding the passenger grab handle have been missing. (the handle that a passenger might grab to get in/out of the vehicle)).

I figured I'd remove the other screen and then find a match to replace, but I can't get the screw out. It's a hex head, needing a socket, but I can't get a socket to fit in that hole that matches the screw size. I've tried needle nose pliers, but it's too tight.

The end of the bolt has a 98 on it. Any idea what size this screw/bolt is, or anyone figured out a good tool to remove it?

Thanks for any thoughts

take one of those small sockets that fits on the end of a driver that looks like a screw driver. Force it in there. <Read> push really hard and expand the plastic around there until you get in there. It is a pita for such a simple procedure, but it will fit if you force it.

Wj Grab Bar

Thanks for your response. That worked (just FYI to anyone else, it's a 6mm bolt).

Now the question is, where can I get another one just like it. It has #98 stamped on the bolt's head. I've been looking line, but no luck. (all results lead to a 1998 jeep grand cherokee, can't seem to search just for the bolt #)

I figure I'll try the local NAPA later today unless someone knows a better way.

Thanks

You will find something to fit.

Is it broken?

2004 GC Limited. Mine were 5.5 MM. And I too used a socket driver (looks like a screwdriver). I had to spray the socket with WD-40 to get it into the access slot (tight fit).

I can confirm that this is definitely a 5.5mm hex on my 2004 WJ GC passenger and driver side grab bars. I will also add that a standard "deep drive" socket will fit in without any force whatsoever. See photo below....

I tried the two socket-drivers I had, but they were both 6mm or 1/4", and kept spinning on the bolt heads. I finally found a Duralast 5.5mm deep socket at AutoZone for $3.99. It fit like a charm and I pulled the A pillar grab handle covers off in a few seconds.

So glad I found this thread!!

Did you mean to post in this thread?

What would we need to go to the Jeep dealer for?

Had to do this again. It is not a size but that did work. It is 5.5mm or 7/33".
