I just got a P0420 in my 03 WJ 4.0. Does my jeep only have the 1 car that sits right in front of the muffler? Anyone have a link to the exhaust diagram? Im at 208k miles...

No. There are 2 more 'mini' cats up near the exhaust manifold.

Are those the ones that go bad? I am assuming that's why its hard to see the pre and post cat o2s because they're tucked up by the engine?

I have no idea if your cats are bad. But check YouTube for some videos of some of the many solutions to cleaning the cat converters.

A new Cat is quite expensive(~$500) so anything's worth a shot.

Waste of time and money

O2 spark plug anti fouler trick works and will set you back 8 bucks.

Will one be enough to keep it far enough from the exhaust not to detect the bad cat?

I guess no one will notice anything, when you apply the antifouler... I recently underwent emissions check with dead cat and they did not measure anything unusual, and hell they tried, when I came with this US 5.2 liter beast to an europen emissions station... They do not hook up the OBD connector for cars older than 2000, that was my only luck, otherwise they would know, but only by measuring the exhaust fumes, they did not notice anything wrong with my emissions... :-)

Oh, I misread your post, you were worried if one antifouler will be enough to prevent the O2 sensor from noticing the bad cat, but I thought you were worried if it will be noticeable like for other people, that you have a bad cat... Sorry, my bad... But I still passed the emission check with a dead cat...

I just wanted to make sure one will be enough not to throw a CEL or do i need to stack 2 on top of each other to extend the o2 further from the pipe?

I put a bottle of Cataclean in the 4Runner and within 150 miles the code cleared.

yep. Done it the end of May. 2500 miles so far. If it does come back I'll do the rear sensor next. The 4Runner sat with a blown head gasket for almost a year till I put the spare engine I had in it and started driving.

Ok so mine is for bank1 correct? On the 4.0 is this the driver or passenger side? I reset the code and will drive it on my 60+ round trip highway commute to work since i had it down for a while due to evap hoses needing to be replaced and havent been driving it. Now that i fixed all the evap hoses and error p0455 is gone. After a week of driving short commutes, it took over a week for the cat code to pop up. Also, this came on the same day(yesterday) i had the muffler replaced because the pipe broke and the weld on the muffler started splitting so i figured id have them put a new one on. I will be parting with my jeep and selling to my father in law so i want to make sure its up to par and will pass emissions for him without any issues. She has 208k and is running great!
