This past weekend I've been reading a ton of oil threads, I've narrowed it down: Shell Rotella T6 or Pennzoil Platinum Or Pennzoil Ultra
In my ZJ 4. SLOW, I ran T6 for years with no problems.
Now, I have a 2003 4.7 HO with 168K on the motor. I think I am going to run Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra.... Either 5w30 or 10w30. I live in Illinois so I see both extreme cold and hot temps.
As for an oil filter, same oil filter I ran in my ZJ, FL-1A.
Before my oil change I am going to run some Seafoam through my oil system, then do an oil and filter change. I am waiting for my magnetic oil pan drain plug to arrive first.
I like the Ultra but it's hard to find around here. Platinum would be my next choice. All the oils listed are good in my book though. You will do good with either of them. I'd run the 5w30 in your climate.

The T6 is a heavier weight than the 5w30 recommended by the factory, but you or your engine will not notice. I would recommend sticking with the 10w30 in the warmer months and going with a 5w30 in the winter months. I would have to look back at my notes, but I believe that they also recommend a synthetic oil. If you take your jeep off road, then following the heavy service maintenance intervals wouldn't hurt either.
Just for the record. I have been using ACE Hardware motor oil in all my vehicles for years. It goes on sale for 2 bucks a quart a few times a year and I usually buy a case. My vehicles burn it at the same rate they burn any other type.
Hi Guys,
My name is Marco, I write you from Milan, Italy.
I have a 4.7 HO WJ, my2002; I use to do myself the oil change, the first time I did it on my WJ I found a strange thing...
Here
I found a Ford drain plug sealed with silicon rubber, and, under the plug, "something" that I couldn't recognize.
I tryed to remove that "ring", but it seems a part of the thread.
I had to use again the Ford plug with the correct seal, without that silicon rubber...; everything works properly, but I would like to understand what was that "thing"

Thank you in advance! P.s. Sorry for my english....
I switched to the normal Pennzoil platinum for a while from conventional oil, but developed a slight leak. Then I switched to the Pennzoil Platinum high mileage (I'm at 116k miles), and have been leak free ever since.
It's been no surprise T6 is one of many perfect oils for L6s for a long time. 4.0s produce the least amount of wear metals typically with oils that have a thickness (HT/HS) >= 3.3. Rotella T6 having a HT/HS of 4.0 makes it nice and thick and the 5w40 rating is perfect for these jeeps. But any thick oil being xw30 or xw40 will suffice. Whether German Castrol 0w30 or Mobil 1 0w40 the list goes on.
I personally think Chevron Delo 400LE 5w40 has a better add pack than T6 and can be found cheaper but the difference is negligible between the HDEO oils like Delo, Rotella or Delvac etc. across all ratings.
