my gauge was fine when I first started my car but after about 4 or 5 min of driving it would go to 0 and the check gauges light would come on. I checked my unit and it was leaking out of the top and onto the crank sensor cable so by default I had to replace that as well.

Would the oil pressure sending unit cause the oil gauge to fluctuate while running?

Yes, I'd be driving down the street. All of a sudden I would hear a chime, check engine light would come on, and oil pressure would mark zero. Really scared me until I read this thread. I think I sold the car before I fixed the issue though.

Same when mine went out. I did notice that the gauge would fluctuate the most when at idle or when i took my foot off the gas.

Mine would just drop to zero then back up I was sure I messed it up because it only started happening after I sprayed degreaser and tried to clean things up down there during an oil change.
Heck even sold it that way told the guy what was up didn't question it at all I sort of miss the 4.7 but just have gotten too sick to try and maintain two WJ's.
Still got my 4.0 runs me to my doctor appointments and my son drives it never had any oil send issues with it maybe its the 4.7's more so.

One thing that makes me suspicious is if I turn the key w/ the engine off, the gauge goes up to about 45. Should be at zero if the engine is off and cold, I would think?
I hate to necrobump a thread, but I'm having the same exact issue. I'm having a ***** of a time actually figuring out where the damn thing is. (I've got the I6 as well, except mine is a 1999) Any point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

I never did figure out what the issue was with mine...I ended up ignoring the gauge, put another 20k miles on it since then, and only recently traded it for a '14 Limited.
