Odd steering noise - video included

Guys

I don't post here often but a friend of mine dropped her Jeep off with me for diagnosis the other day and I'm having difficulty pinpointing the issue. I know audible issues are difficult to determine when you're not on the scene but I figured I'd try my best.

She has an 02' WJ 4.7 and the PS Pump took a dump a few months ago. From what I am told, immediately after the PS pump was replaced this sound appeared. You have to finesse the wheel to get it to make the noise but it happens often enough while driving that it needs fixed

(sound is much more audible ~20 second mark)

Initially it sounds like its coming from the column area but I've popped the panels off and it doesnt seem like it really is. Part of me is thinking the sound is resonating back through into the cabin from the steering shaft but this is hard to diagnose with a 1 man operation.

Another part of me thinks she may have gotten a bad pump out of the box. She complains the steering is a little stiffer compared to what it used to be but I have no idea what it felt like me before so its hard to judge. I have also verified that the system is bled and the fluid level is appropriate.

Thanks in advance

The odd thing is that you put your head right up next to that pump (I had her turn the wheel when she dropped it off) and the noise doesnt appear to be anywhere around the physical pump. Unless the pump is groaning, resonating through the hyd lines and being backfed up through the wheel.

I was going to edit my post and add exactly what you posted. Sounds like resonance.

I vote resonance. Newb

I'd go out and get yourself a mechanics stethoscope to start.
It's a great tool that will assist you with all audible related issues.

Just picked up a 2001 to daily and have a little fun with, and it does the same exact thing only it doesn't do it all the time. I thought the same of the noise potentially coming just from the dash but i guess you debunked that. If you discover what it is can you please report it back in here? Its on my list of things to fix

Well back to square one. New pump yielded the same damned noise.

Put some lithium grease on the rubber bushing that sits in the firewall for the steering shaft and also on the steering shaft u-joints. No change

I'm beginning to think its the steering gear box itself. Need a helper so I can dig in there and poke around

Do you have the correct PS fluid. Could this be an air lock somwhere?

The fluid I used meets the Chrysler spec and I had the vehicle up in the air for 5+ minutes rotating from lock to lock in an attempt to bleed the system out - I doubt it is a hydraulic issue. It really just sounds like two pieces of rubber having high friction, or two whales mating........either way

Does the noise still occur if you play with the wheel while the engine is not running?

Its impossible to replicate with the engine off because you have no steering assist. You have to turn the wheel kind of fast (you can see in the video) to get it to happen.

It also does not exist if you have the front end off of the ground. I suspect this is simply because there is no "load" on any of the associated steering components.

Check these out before doing any other work:

http://www.wjjeeps.com/tsb.htm#STEERING

I'm at work and don't really have the best quality speakers to listen to your noise, but if I had to guess, I'd take a look at TSB# 1900203
