Last September I jumped up from a Dodge Dakota to a 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo. I bought a base package and added a bunch of options. I did not get the infinity stereo package. The deck (cd/cassette stereo) looks the same as the ones used in the cherokees with the infinity equipt trucks. Can I just upgrade the speakers? I have been thinking of buying infinity kappa's for the front doors (The doors are 6x9's right?) and maybe something similar for the rears (dont know the size) Should I also change the dash speakers? My other options are to completely remove the stereo are replace it with a totally aftermarket system. Can someone please give me some recommendations? I would prefer just to replace the speakers with infinitys if possible. Thank you in advance and I apolize for such an un-organized post.
It would be a waste of time (and money) to just upgrade the speakers. The factory HU is only around 10w per channel. You need to at least add a new amp when upgrading the speakers. The door speakers are 6x9's and the rear 6.5", but 6.5's can also be adapted to the 6x9 openings. Here is a link with information about audio components for the 1999-2001 Jeeps: http://www.wjjeeps.com/audio.htm
I got the nice Infinity system in my Jeep when I bought it a couple months ago ... I thought it would be a waste to just change it all out and replace with my old with my preexisting system. Instead, I kept the whole system that came with the Jeep intact and added one amp and box with 2 - 12's. It sounds awesome!! I will eventually have to put in new dash speakers ... those are known to blow ALOT and they are pretty pricey. If I were you ... I would keep the door and dash speakers ... only using them for treble ... put in some woofers in the rear with their own amp (so you have one amp for the highs and one for the lows). That should save you some money, although you will miss abit in the mids, but not really noticable. Head units are pretty cheap nowadays so I would switch that out for a endtail Alpine (it will last you forever) ... that is one beauty of a custom system ... it will last a long, long time. As you get money or just want to add stuff then you can in time!!
