Mystery coolant leak 2002 I6 4.6 stroker

So here is the situation which has me baffeled. Last year I rebuilt my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo engine after blowing a piston skirt on cylinder #3. As part of the rebuild I replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses and every gasket in the engine and cooling system. What I have noticed is every oil change 3000 miles my coolant level in the bottle is down about 3/4 of an inch below the full line. I have checked everything from the seals, the oil and the radiator. I see no leak, no mixing with the oil and nothing I can smell inside the exhaust or in the cabin of the truck. Today I checked the passenger side to see if I am leaking at the heator core and it is dry. I get good heat and using the Mopar HOAT coolant. Everything is textbook and running fine. On my other vehicle I would top off the coolant once a year so what gives. Is this normal for a stroker? I am not burning any oil and am using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30 oil and the Jeep is very happy. If someone could shead so light on this please let me know. The heater core is the only original part of the cooling system but as I had mentioned earlier it is dry as a bone.

did you do a full coolant flush and refill? the right way? cant just fill up the radiator and the reservoir and drive away, gotta run the motor and keep adding coolant til it tops off, helps gets the air out of the system.

those jeeps take 50/50 coolants, and water usually evaporates.

its also normal to top off coolant yearly for any car, hell my truck takes a gallon weekly, water only

Yes I did according to the procedure in the Service manual and let it run for awhile and top it off. One thing I will check is the coolant mixture using the tester just to make sure its not too weak. I did mix it prior to the fill 50/50. I have 3500 miles on it since I filled it so I would think it would settle down by then but then again I only had to top it off a couple of times. I will keep an eye on things for next 1000 miles or so. I will be doing some long trips this fall and winter so I would like to make sure all is well before then. If I have top do a heater core I would like to do I before winter. Brrrrrrrr!! Lets hope it does not come to that.

store a blanket in the spare tire compartment in case the heater goes out.

Its been great since I have done it. Definately more tourqe and better exceleration. I am glad that I did it but I am still working out the kinks. I am now working on the custom interior as we speak and hope to put in the leather seat next week. I love the extra power when merging on the highway.

Right on, another totally satisfied 4.6 driver / owner = Awesome power
I'am sure your's move's out quicker than mine, I've added a lot of extra weight, bigger tires
an 4'' lift , That's great man'' . I bet your's burn's rubber compared to mine'' Lol .

scross1220 09-01-2013 11:07 PM

I want to do a 3 inch lift to. Its on my list of things on my dream list. Burning rubber well maybe not but torque yes. Do you know what a good beefy rear axle to get? With your tires and lift I am sure you upgraded yours.

I just installed a new radiator and hoses 3000 miles ago due to a cracked radiator. My low coolant annunciation came on last week so I added a quart of water to the reservoir. I think the system just burped some air but I have the same situation you describe. No signs of coolant loss but I had a drop in quantity somehow.

2002 4.7 experience.....first five years never added coolant....

Changed coolant when radiator replaced ( rock damage) and noticed what you are seeing.

Rebled radiator again using correct procedure and problem went away.... That was six years ago .

On my Jeep , i do not need to add additional Coolant for evaporation over time. And after 11 years and a boatload of miles It still burns a quart every 7000 miles on Mobil1 10/30..... Can't break it ;)

i will try to rebleed it again today and top it off. Also will check the mixture.
