Wondered that myself.. I plan to go back and add a couple bolts in shear, just for piece of mind.. and mine is welded solid across the top, and down the sides on the frame.

temporarily, yes. i had to get it together for the Bantam Jeep Heritage show that i have to work tomorrow. so i knew i wasnt going to be using it and i wont use the winch til i finish welding underneath.

Can someone tell me will a warn vr8000 work with this setup?
I have a chance to buy a used one for 1/2 price.

Yes it should.. They are almost identical to the smitty in dimensions so it shouldn't be an issue!

I am also wondering if this ends up with the winch plate right in front of or beneath the rad. One concern is that a relatively small front end hit might send the plate into the rad which could really ruin your day. any insight on this?

it is right in front of the radiator/condensor; same as the thin stamped rail is now.

It is closer than the stock crossmember to the condensor, but quite a bit thicker.

You do loose the foam under the bumper cover, so there is no "give" for minor fender benders.

So if you are prone to running into stuff regularly, might not be for you.
