I'd love to have a welder to build my own bumper.

Its lookin good, but you have no support on the mounting plates for upwards or downwards pressure, as of now from what i can see your mounting plates would just bend where they meet the unibody.

Very interested in how it turns out, you have a good start!

Looks great so far, X2 on beefing it up or it will bend at the unibody.

I would try and find some 1/4" 4x2 angle and use that for a mount or even some 5/16 - 3/8" angle if you can. I can't tell for sure from the pics, but did you sandwhich the unibody in between your mount and a piece of steel inside the unibody channel? It looks like you did, but I can't tell for sure. It looks real good so far.

If you had a 1/2 piece of steel on edge under the flat steal you have bolted on it would give support for pulling up and down. that flat steel you used looks pretty light and it will bend. It looks like a piece may fit down the middle of each flat iron you have, right between the bolts. You could then 45 it back and it would also work as a clevis point.

1/2" would be way overkill IMO. If you were just going to add a single piece welded in the middle, then 1/4" or a little thicker should be plenty. You'd bend the unibody before you'd bend that type of set-up.

im just going to either make a bracket from the mount to the metal bumper on the car or double up the bracket with another 1/4 flat stock. but thanks for the great comments. im working on it tommorrow for a while, ill take pics =]

Looks good so far. I installed a Warn front receiver on Laredo for the winch and can use it front or rear that way but for my limited (which is my next project) I like what you've done. Looking forward to seeing more pics! I also installed 2 additional grade 8 bolts (1 each side) to the hitch for a total of 6 bolts. I've heard that the front receiver, which is very similar to what you've done, strengthens the uni-body.

but i just tacked up some flat stock for the winch part and started to drill out shackle mounts.

finally my metal came in, i didn't realize how long it takes to figure out the exact angle and where to cut and blah blah, got a little bit done today. i still have to angle up from the top to the headlights and piece together the rest, the fun part =/.

here are some pictures.
