No. I tried haha

BTW, there has been a few threads over the years regarding the tags on 242s. They used many different designations, 242j, 242wj, etc. They dont really mean a thing and were randomly distributed on the LD and HD models. I believe the tag on my HD reads 242wj.

When I looked today, wjjeeps shows the 242 only holds 2.85-3.0 pints in the "maintenance" section, but under the "transfer case" section it does indeed show the HD capacity at 6.5 pints....looks like an error on their site. As long as you drained it and filled back to the fill hole level you are fine.

I see that now. Thanks Red. I wonder if there is even a difference in capacity between the two? The maintenance section doesnt differentiate. Mute point now i guess. I drained and filled until it came out the fill hole. 4wd works so thats all that matters i guess. Thanks again.

My 242 came from a I6 and I swapped it behind my 4.7l. It was tagged 242wj but does not have the aluminum tail cone. It is just a standard 242.

AllData lists fluid capacity at 3 pints, which equals 1.5 quarts. WJJeeps mixed up the fluid capacity of the transmission (6.5) for the transfercase.

The olympic was basically a v8 laredo with selectrac, limited wheels and a limited grill. Oh yeah and a leather steering wheel.
Now I get the rarity! I think I now understand why the original buyer bought what he bought. He got the fully optioned limited package, but with the 242 tcase, and with a tow bar. I think he intended to do a LOT of towing with the Jeep, and probably not a lot off offroading. Explains why the tcase selector needs two hands and a lot of body weight to move, and the part time light on the dash hardly ever works right (probably was left in 2WD almost exclusively and I am told the part time sensor needs some moving about to lubricate it otherwise it gets stuck). The engine had also been replaced--perhaps due to excessively heavy towing? Who knows...

It should shift with ease. At least every 242 I have had has shifted like a breeze.

More for me to fix then. I have a feeling I'll just leave it in Full-Time and ignore it, the rust has almost taken the subframe anyways.

When I first test drove my WJ, the shifter just about required putting both feet on the dash and pulling the shifter backwards. The case gets extremely stiff if not shifted for a couple years or 40k miles.
