My v8 has 242j???

Just changed transfer case fluid and noticed my 242 is j model. I thought these were only with i6. I guess somebody replaced it with the wrong one? Pretty confused and a lil disappointed. Kinda makes me wanna just sell it and get another one.

That's a 242HD. It has the long aluminum tail cone on it. You have a rare Jeep my friend.

are you sure it all drained out? Whre you parked on a "nose down" incline at all? I dont remember having to put near that much (3.5 quarts) in mine when I changed it either though

the 242HD behind the 4.7 holds about 2 qts, fill it until it comes out the fill plug on level ground.

You didn't know you had Selectrac? It should say right on the bezel...
As long as you fill it up til it comes out the fill hole who cares. Check it again in 1000 miles to be sure it's still full. The v8 Selectrac is fun! Enjoy it!

Any WJ with a 4.7L and a 242 is rare. It's a very hard combo to find. I ended up buying an Overland and swapping in a 242HD.

I knew I had a selctrac, just didn't know if it was the hd or not since it took right at 1.5 quarts and that sounded more like the capacity for the j model behind the i6's. I didn't know a lot about these jeeps when I bought it but I knew I wanted the selectrac because I didn't want the full time 4wd with the quadradrive. What I didn't know was it had open difs. In hindsight I wish I had gotten quadradrive and done the 242 swap so I'd have variloks. A lot cheaper to swap a tcase than axles or lockers. I don't really think I'll ever have the need for full lockers but would love the variloks.

X2 on it being a 242 HD. Is your WJ an Olympics edition, by any chance? They had the V8 and a 242 standard. About two quarts is right.

Most limiteds came stock with the 272, that's why the 242 is rare. It's considered a downgrade and not a lot of people ordered a downgrade. IIRC the Olympic edition was an export only model. I may be wrong.

The olympic was basically a v8 laredo with selectrac, limited wheels and a limited grill. Oh yeah and a leather steering wheel.
