Is my service tech bs'ing me?

I had just changed my spark plugs and had my 2004 4.7 WJ in the shop and was talking to the tech about my lousy gas mileage. He told me that any time the plugs are changed I need to take it to the shop to have them reprogram the computer (at $95). Is he giving it to me straight or will the computer relearn by itself?

wanna know the $95 dollar trick they'll do?

go out Pull your positive battery cable and then turn the key to drain all the voltage.

reconnect battery and start it up and let it idle for a few minutes then go drive it.

i really like to know what resetting the computer and new spark plugs have to do with eacgh other?

when the plugs are being changed the battery should be disconnected and when you put it back on the computer should rest itself anyway

xjoshx, why the positive and not the negative cable?

it doesn't matter which cable you pull, most say negative cause there is no shock hazard.

that being said, when you change spark plugs there is technically no reason to remove your battery cables to disconnect power. the only need to do so is if you computer is not tuning itself fast enough.

but either way, disconnecting your battery and turning the key drains the batter and the memory drains allowing the computer to start fresh more or less, and it will learn easier because it is all based on averages.
