I had just changed my spark plugs and had my 2004 4.7 WJ in the shop and was talking to the tech about my lousy gas mileage. He told me that any time the plugs are changed I need to take it to the shop to have them reprogram the computer (at $95). Is he giving it to me straight or will the computer relearn by itself?

Working with cars is a little like a really awesome date: you start out expecting this to be something simple and straightforward; four hours later you're laying under her, panting and cursing, and things are a lot more complicated than you thought.
When my Jeep stops making strange noises, I become concerned. That usually means I have to go back and find whatever fell off.

it doesn't matter which cable you pull, most say negative cause there is no shock hazard.
that being said, when you change spark plugs there is technically no reason to remove your battery cables to disconnect power. the only need to do so is if you computer is not tuning itself fast enough.
but either way, disconnecting your battery and turning the key drains the batter and the memory drains allowing the computer to start fresh more or less, and it will learn easier because it is all based on averages.
oh and did you use platinum plugs? switch back to the stock copper plug and your gas mileage and you will like the difference
