my buddy has a 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 4.7 V8. Has new radiator new tie rods brakes calipers rotors tires etc. But there's a misfire wondering what could cause this and the fix? Coils? or what not?
He's offerd me the Jeep for $1500. I could give the one i have now to my sister. Just wondering what Im looking at fixing befoer I buy. I believe its worth $1500 but how much money will have to put out .
It really depends. It could be as simple as a spark plug. It could also be misfiring off coolant from a head gasket. Without diagnosing, any suggestions would be guesses.
cycle the key on and off 3 times without starting leaving it in the on position the third time and record the numbers on the odometer. If it says done it thinks there isn't a problem.
I just had a guy do a motor swap for me and had a P code for the #4 cylinder misfire detected... turned out it was a plug that must have gotten dropped. I had .003" gap. Gapped it to .035, reset the codes and all was fine. Good Luck!
I'd do one of those tests for combustion gas in the coolant. I wouldn't be surprised if the head gasket was leaking. These things really don't like being overheated. If it's coolant in the cylinder causing the misfire it should be getting combustion gases in the coolant. Also when the engine is cold if you pull the radiator cap and start the baby up it would shoot out like a geyser on mine. That's how mine was when I bought it. (bought mine with a known engine problem, btw) Any steam coming out the exhaust?
Any odb2 tool reader would work for simple codes like this.

The other day I realized that my ticking may be from my brother putting in incorrect spark plugs (some platinum things) when it should be using the copper ones (4.7L, non-HO).
Didn't realize that could cause pre-ignition (or something?)
I've had the copper ones for a year now since they were on sale for a few $ each. I guess it's time to install
Frame is solid. Remember price was $1500 new tires and it didn't overheat no head gasket issues either.
You guys think good deal?
