Good question. The 242HD (4.7) and 242J (4.0) do have differences not sure if the shifter is one of them.

No you don't need the shifter, it will shift fine you'll just not have the marks on the shifter plate that's all, I'm still using the quadra drive shifter all the way up is 2wd one back is part time 4wheel, 2 back is full time 4wheel.

Just in case you missed it,
If it's the 242HD you will need the heavy duty 32spline driveshaft out of a 02-03 jeep grand cherokee with the 4.7L and 242HD case, and yes its shorter. NV247 has a 27spline count.

Oh ok strange that they use the same shifter when there are 2 more positions with the 242. Is the linkage or the way the shifter attaches different at all?

Just ordered the rear shaft from the same place. Cost another $75 to add the rear ds. Looks like that's all I will need, so once I get the parts delivered I will start the swap. Ive done a similar swap in my XJ and TJ so it should be rather straight forward and familiar.

It hooks right up, Only thing you have to do is move the linkage cable to the other hole by the transfer case, some WJ's don't have 2 holes and you have to find one off a donor jeep, I got lucky and had two holes, LOL that didn't sound right.
Even though the quadra trac shifter works, I want the slec-trac shifter but haven't found a good one yet only ones I've seen at the junk yards are cracked or have cig burns on them...

EDIT: When you shift-it it stops in position made by the transfer case and not the shifter

That is cool. You have a fortune invested in yours. I like your suspension setup and want the same for mine but it will have to wait until I have another 5K to put into suspension, new bushings everywhere. shocks, tires, etc.

Thanks, yeah I put more into it than I really planned on
Anyhow it's a fun to drive, drives better than stock ever did that for sure also supprised how well the 4.7ho moves it with 33" tires using stock 373 gears, just wish it had around 400HP

Just got my shipping notice for the 242HD tcase and rear ds. Should be here by next Wednesday. $400 shipped for both seems like a fair deal to me. Very excited to get this 247 boat anchor out of my rig. For daily driving and snow it's fine, but I have hated it on the trail. My XJ had the 242 and I liked it WAY more. I'm super excited to have my 4.7HO with the select trac. I will post pics of the install and report back with any issues I run into.

Cool!
Did you get new u-joints, might as well change those while you have the shaft in hand and a couple bottles of atf +4 and maybe even a rear seal.

I think when all is said and done, you'll actually have "SelecDrive".

Will grab some spicer joints and tranny output seal this weekend. Already have the ATF+4 ready to go. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this wil be a smooth swap.

It will be fine you got to think positive when getting parts from a yard sometimes...Some yards don't know their azz from a hole in the ground, but I won't go there right now but I got some good ones I could tell ya, lol

The good news is that I got my parts from LKQ. They are one of the biggest suppliers of used and remaned parts in America. They have fantastic customer service and a great warranty. They are the guys that built the remaned long block 4.0 for my XJ, they also found me a low miles tranny for my Kia, and found me an updated TJ 06 0331 head to put on my XJ. They seem to have junkyards and shops all over the place.
