Instead of having to switch rear drive shafts can't you take the output transaxle shaft from the 247 and put that into your 242 hd and everything should bolt right up.

changing input shaft is not all that difficult if you dont have a proper snap ring pliers then getting the input shaft out of the case will be trouble some, also you need a #1 extractor to remove the pin that holds the shift fork to its shaft. once its back up dont try to test it with all the weels in the air, you will think its not working properly well it did not for mine anyway, also not because you put the case say in 4x4 fulltime that it will be in that mode if you dont know how to shift it it will be in 4x4 partime. after being puzzled for a while and a lot of reading best way to shift the case is . drive in straight line pop tranny in N shift case to desired mode then pop back in drive you should feel it engaging this is valid for 2wd 4x4part time and 4x4 full time only .
Neutral and 4x4low is while rolling at 3-5 mph shift to 4x4 low . if this is not right someone can chime in .

Thanks for the reply but that's not the one I need. I bought that one thinking it would work but it doesnt. Mine is just like the OP's in his fifth picture. Its closed on one end and snaps in the shift cable. Unfortunately mine crumbled into a few pieces when I popped it off the shift lever. Anyone else? I'm going to try and copy the OP's pic...

You will need a rear driveshaft yes. If you do get a V8 242 see if they have the rear ds as well and will match up to the trans with no mods. You may also look at changing your front DS as it is probably the CV style if you want to put a lift on later. IMHO it's easier to do now since you will have everything apart.

You will need to take both cases apart and swap the inputs if you use a I6 case.

Direct bolt-in, if you're swapping a v8 242 into a v8 rig....if you're trying to get any other combination (v8 to v6) you'll need to swap input shafts.

Why would you want to do this swap? Seems like the QD works quite well and running in 2wd has no gas mileage benefits; so why change?
