I blowed up another PS pump! WTF!?!?

2000 WJ, 4.0L, about 165K, no lift, not wheeled, DD.

My factory original PS pump on my WJ died in November with about 160K on it so I replaced it. Followed all the advice I could find, i.e. used the correct fluid, bled all the air out, etc. Well, the replacement pump died on me on Saturday. I was sitting at a stop light when I saw smoke and smelled something burning. Sure enough, the pump had puked all over itself. Now I need to get the replacement replaced. It lasted less than 4 months. What did I do wrong? Was this just a bad pump? Should I install an inline filter to get rid of any crap that may still be in the lines? Any advice?

BTW, I did search for this first. I just want to hear what you all have to say.

Reman pump? My guess is a junk pump. Unless you got a factory new part from the dealer, it's a crap shoot. Does your Jeep have a power steering cooler? If so, it's possible that fluid is not getting cycled back into the reservoir fast enough or at all.

If it's the reservoir seal, be sure your cap is venting reservoir pressure out

You just have a leak somewhere. I bet the pump is fine.

the high pressure hose likes to take a dump from time to time. check that out before you throw another pump at it.

I'm sure it's not just a leak. I checked it periodically b/c it made noise at full lock turns ever since it was installed and there wasn't a drop of ps fluid anywhere until it died. Then it was everywhere. It was pouring out the top of the reservoir even with the cap still on and tight.

I replaced that hose when I put the pump in. It's only 4 months old as well. I'd rather just replace the pump since it's under warranty instead of spending a week fighting with the hose.

Lol. I know.

When I install the new pump (probably tomorrow), should I flush the old fluid out of the lines first?

There's a TSB on the WJs for hoses that rub each other. Usually the owner complains about a noise or vibration, and the dealership bends them a bit further apart or something. Check this out just in case it's a hose that's rubbed through. I think you'll find info on this on on WJJeeps.com - Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ 1999-2004

Making noise at full lock is normal. Put another pump in, it's your $$
