I just had my fuel filter replaced and when i first got it back and drove it home no problems at all. Then the next day i drove it, it has a loud whining noise coming from the fuel filter. i went under to investigate and the fuel filter was vibrating and causing a whining noise. So i took off the bracket bolts (for curiosity) to see if it would help at all, and it didnt. On the outside its sorta loud but in the jeep its very loud and agrivating. So i read that it could possible be my fuel pump and i turned the key onto the on position and it made a normal noise not the whining noise. After i drive it and turn it off then turn the key to the on position the fuel pump makes the whining noise. I dont know if i got a bad fuel filter or what but the noise stays the same at idling and acceleration. Theres no problem in performance at all.
I dont want to take it back and have my mechanic tell me a bad fuel pump and i pay to have it replaced and the whining noise still be there?
Anything would help thanks

And it idles a little rough.
After "getting on it" it loped after turning it off and letting it sit then turning it back on. so i thought it was the fuel filter since i recently replaced plugs
I would agree that's its a bad batch. I went to a napa about 100 miles away to try and avoid that when they gave a warranty, so no saying how big the "batches" are. All I know is 100 bucks for the mopar was hard to choke down but worth it after changing it three times in a couple weeks.
I actually am suffering from the same thing right now. I followed the crowd of people recommending WIX filters and replaced my Stock filter. I noticed it after about 100 miles, it's an almost unbearable sound. However, there is hope. The first thing I did was I tightened down the bolts that hold the brackets a little more. This morning I got under the Jeep and grabbed the filter while the Jeep was running, and almost instantly the sound faded, leading me to believe it is a "harmonic" sound caused by something being loose. I noticed the bracket holding the filter (wrapped around it) is loose enough for me to rotate the filter a little bit. I had a flash back to when I was looking at the stock filter and remembered I was unable to rotate the filter because the bracket holding it was much better designed.
You have a few options, You could try to tighten the bracket around the filter, Have where ever you bought it from swap that filter for another new filter, If you still have the old filter you could try to swap the bracket around it, or buy an MOPAR filter.
IMO I am just going to buy a Mopar filter when I get around to it, I am experiencing no performance related issues, just the moan of the filter being loose in the bracket.
About an hour ago, for the hell of it I replaced the wix filer with another wix filter by CarQuests recommendation, got the noise again. Went to the dealer and bought the $86.00 mopar filter. Noise gone. I'm getting good at this fuel filter changing...
Same here, (I know this is an old post but I found it very helpful) changed it with a Wix, about 6 months later, an intermittent high pitched noise came with no apparent rhyme or reason. I thought it was fuel pump, saved up some dough for a while and crawled under there. Realized it was fuel filter/fuel line related. The noise & vibration stopped when I squeezed the fuel line towards the fuel filter, thinking it was a bad fuel line clip, I replaced it. To no avail, that screeching high pitched noise came back... going the Mopar route. My guess is that the flange holding the fuel line to the fuel pump is a bit to thin. The noise goes away under hard acceleration causing the line to tighten under heavy fuel load in filter. I'll chime in again next weekend when the Mopar arrives...
Keep us posted Dom...This is the thread I needed to see. Swapped the Mopar w/ a Wix about a month ago. Whining ever since. I was going to try the purolator filter, guess I'll pay for the mopar one.
The new jeep part number is indeed (6819-3495-AA).
Parts guy said the old part number would still work just fine, 5210-0283-AG.
He also said the (AG) at the end is real important, different letter then (G) then it'll be for another Chrysler vehicle.
I ordered it through Jeep, it was only $52.75... it's on back order, another few days & I should here my WJ squeal no more!!
I can't remember what I paid for the WIX part, but if I knew it was around $50 up front, I may have went that route.
In the past, I try to stay away from dealers do to prices. Guess they may be lowering them do to internet competition... I don't know.
& yes, it fits with 4.0 L6 also
Hope this helps & I'll chime in when I put new one in.
PS rockauto has mopar for $30.00, i should have checked there first.
Yea, I've found it a few places for about $30, My problem is I'm not convinced swapping it again will fix it, there may be another common issue folks are having. There are a few active threads on this subject at the moment. Some have no issues after swapping in a wix, purolator, etc. Some swapped back to Mopar and it fixed it, some swapped back to Mopar and it didn't fix the issue. I'm holding out for a little while longer. After all there is no performance issue, just the noise.
So my brother suggested we go to autozone and get a new fuel filter. Went and got it, installed it, was fine for the first ignition, then the next it was whining. So he told me that some are faulty and that you can just go get another. As said, I did go get another, installed it, and again the noise. Is it possible I bought two faulty fuel filters in a row?
Getting pretty good at changing these damn things now...
Put some miles on it and see if it goes away. Mine stopped after about a month. So many folks have this issue with various filters. I think its something in the setup.
i am having the same issue immediately after a shop replaced the fuel filter. mis is mopar. The noise is loud & annoying (like on the scale of exhaust drone). Will see if it goes away, but i'm thinking not. I likely can't stand the sound for a month.
Has anyone tried putting some sort of foam or insulation on the lines and or filter and see if its some sort of harmonic issue?
Just curious as there seems no rhyme or reason to this I put a WIX in my 4.0 and zero issue besides just running better overall yet some do wix and have noise some do mopar and have noise just seems like maybe something else maybe getting moved out a little and vibrating I don't know just throwing ideas out.
good idea losttech. Mine was the same noise, like an exhaust drone. Very annoying, yes! Not sure what changed to make it go away. But I was very close to changing it again, and it stopped.
I have been having this problem with my 01 WJ since I put an aftermarket replacement filter/regulator on last fall. The noise started shortly after and then disappeared for the winter. It started up again a couple weeks ago and on Friday the regulator in the filter failed (low pressure). I replaced it with a Fram and the noise was still there so I did some sleuthing. Took the output port off and put a line into a gas can. No more noise until I put it back together. Then I removed the return line to the pump and put that line to the gas can. No more noise, so I blew into the return line and guess what - high pitch scream. I am leaning toward gas quality (Shell) affecting the valve in the return line of the pump and the higher return flow following filter replacement since the gas is filtered ahead of the regulator. I have added Rislone additive to the full tank to see if that will clear it up. Will re-post later on with result.
I just replaced the filter on mine for a long crank and just because of the miles the jeep has, and now noise. I can get a whine when putting a certain amount of air into the return line, so I really think the problem is there and shows up at the fuel filter replacement do to a different return rate, because less air or more air and no whine, just does it at a certain rate. I know air isn't the same as fluid, so there is that and I have yet to resolve the problem. I looked at all the o rings and did everything to bleed air out and nothing made it better. My noise gets quieter as the demand for fuel goes up, and will altogether go away if not retuning to the tank. I have yet to see what the fuel pressure should be, but I have now 65 psi on a gauge.
I thought about the possibility of air and that was my main reason for running the return line into a gas can. I saw no sign of air in the system. The noise is definitely coming from the valve at the return port of the fuel pump. The possibilities that I have come up with so far are:
1) Less resistance in the filter causing more flow back through the return line.
2) Fuel type - winter / summer and quality. (viscosity)
3) Fuel temperature.(viscosity / density)
4)Wear in the return valve of the pump affected by the higher return rate of a new filter.
It is probably a combination of all of these which makes it very difficult to track down the source but from what I gather, it almost always seem to start following a fuel filter change and that would be why everyone is looking at the filter / regulator as the source of the noise.
I don't have a solution but at least a conclusion. The reason I changed mine to begin with was a long start after the WJ is warmed up. Cold, it fires right up. Go in a store and start a few minutes later, long start. No other fuel problems after started. I thought it could be the pressure regulator in the filter so I changed to a Wix. That is when I started getting the noise, so I took it off and payed double for a Mopar from the dealership...still had the noise.
My conclusion...it is not brand specific, mine made the noised with Wix or Mopar. The dealership said they had never encountered this ???
Maybe a Mopar mechanic or engineer could see this thread and give some insight because it seems to be a pretty common event.
Having the same issue, just changed it today with a Fram. Push in connector was a treat, difficult access, but got it done on my 04 WJ 4.0. Running better, was idling rough. More responsive acceleration as well, but I drive like a senior citizen, so take that for what it's worth. Anyway, the noise is annoying but at least I knew it was coming because of this and other threads, so thank you all. Can anyone tell me if it goes away with time, or do I have to keep my radio volume up forever now?
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
