I think I might have a small HG leak. I have the code for misfire on #5 and I've been SLOWLY loosing coolant(loosing it from radiator, doesn't want to pull it in from reserve). Changed plugs and swapped coils and still get the same code. I'll do some more digging and do a compression test before I buy anything.
Anyway if it turns out to be the HG I'll have them resurfaced anyway, so how far down can I have them milled? Might as well bump the compression up slightly while I'm at it. I've done that on every other vehicle I've replaced a HG on.
Personally I prefer to take off as little as possible, but if you are going for performance I would look at the FSM or contact your local automotive machine shop as they should have access to machine specs.
Then just take off the minimum to get them flat. You can also deck the block too, which is what I always do on my rebuilds. Never had a problem doing both, but my machine shop does just take off whats needed and no more.
Just enough to get them flat. It doesnt take much on the 4.7 to bump the compression up. My deck was warped and they had to take off 7 thousands. I cant remember the exact number now but it was a good chuck it bumped the compression up with the stock gasket size.
