Grinding noise?

I'm usually in the zj section but this is for a friend. He has a 02 wj overland.

When you're done making a turn and start going straight you feel a (sort of) grinding noise/feeling but only for a few seconds. Also sometimes when u come a stop, and then start accelerating you will feel it for a few seconds.

It's hard to explain its not really a grinding feeling, more of a wobble feeling from somewhere in the front diff or drive shaft I think.

I did a visual inspection and that only thing I found was that I was able to turn his front driveshaft about a half inch when it's parked.
Is that normal? I checked my zj and it doesn't do that.

Both our grands have the 249 TC if that helps anything

Any ideas?

Hows the brakes? id start looking at the simplest things and go from there. I have an 04 and it was grinding/scraping at low speeds and right turns, swapped the pads out and the inside was gone. Anyway new brakes=no noise[for me at least] just an idea buddy

Didn't think of that but I'll check it out. The new owner and the previous owner are both my friends and I can see the previous owner not keeping up with maintenance so I'll take a look

Has the e brake been replaced or adjusted recently? My buddy's Cherokee has similar issues and ended up being his ebrake shoe came loose and was grabbing the rim

Check the drive shaft CV joints,
I had the same noise and changed the rear CV joint of my drive shaft and all gone...
The seal was broken and sand got inside the joint and it made a loud grinding noise at low speed and after few weeks the noise became louder on high speed as well...

Check CV joints..

If the drive shaft has that much play, sounds to me like a U joint might be bad.
