Grand Cherokee Noise

I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct place.
I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee 2.7crd. Recently I have had a rumbling noise coming from the front end that as got worse over the last 5,000 miles. This noise as now developed and is occurring at all speeds, in a straight line and in right hand bends, but disappears in left hand bends. There is also a vibration that has developed through the steering wheel, and can also be felt though the floor. I have jacked the front end up, and rotated a wheel. It moves about an inch before the other wheel moves. This is the same with both wheels, but there is a loud clunking noise from the diff when the slack is taken up. The front prop shaft only rotates about 2 millimeters before the wheels turn. Wheel bearing seam good, no movement when I waggle the road wheel top and bottom. The diff oil is the correct level and new, about 3 years, 30,000 miles back. Also the cv joint rubbers are looking good.
Could anyone offer any suggestions as to what this problem could be.
Thanks for reading.

diff oil at 30k is actually past the need for change.

it sounds like you've got gear problems, i'd open up the diff and have a look. test for side play and back lash on the ring gear.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

I did think about that ratmonkey, but the problem is not there in a left hand bend, is that normal with a ring gear fault? The steering is also wondering quite a lot just now, and getting worse.
