Gasket Leak ?

While changing my oil today I noticed a bit of oil/dirt collected behind the oil drain. I cleaned it all off and replaced the oil and drove around for a bit. It is actively leaking, not much but enough to worry about. I just checked and tightened up this bold where it's leaking to see if that stopped it. If it doesn't is there a gasket/seal around this that would have to be replaced ? The picture isn't great as I took it with my phone but it should be enough for you guys.

Luckily it looks like tightening the bolt stopped the leak. Will know for sure tomorrow.

If its coming from the bolt you can try some LocTite,the one thats not permanent.Dont cake it on so it gets in the inside of the pan when you tighten it.Just paint the threads.

That may be where it is dripping from, but that is not the source of your leak. That bolt is only holding your transmission inspection plate on, so tightening it will not stop the leak. Doing that may form a tighter seal between the plate and the transmission and slow the drip for a short period of time, but it will fill up until it finds a new place to drip from (and most likely make a worse mess than it would if you just let it drip). You need to check your valve cover gasket and hope it is leaking down the back side, but most likely it is your rear main seal.

The bolt just holds the inspection cover. There is no gasket. The oil is not coming from the bolt.

Well that's not good. I don't know enough to replace seals so I guess the Jeep dealer will have to fix it.

That could get expensive if you just hand it over and tell them its leaking and you want it fixed. Find the leak's source before you just take it in, they could charge you anywhere from an hour to 3hrs of labor just to locate it.

What is behind that plate ? If I take it off some type of fluid isn't going to come pouring out (normally) is it ? Maybe it's something simple I could do.

The only fluid that will come out is a bit of seepage from your leak, no gushers. The following videos will give you an idea of what's involved in a rear main seal repair.

So if it's that two piece seal then my oil has to be drained to replace it and the whole oil pan has to come off or was that because the oil pump was replaced in those videos ?

Yes, all of that has to come off. I only did the oil pump because I had to get in there anyway.

It turns out my warranty doesn't expire until the end of this month, thank God. I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow morning to have them fix it. After watching those videos I knew I wasn't going to be able to do all that. Thanks for all the help guys !

Dropped her off at the dealer this afternoon so I didn't have to get up at 7am again to take it over there by 8. Hopefully they don't take forever to fix the problem. They are SLOW. Had my Jeep 2 weeks and a day to fix a window rattle when I first got it, which still rattles when it's really windy.

If it is a tiny drip I wouldn't worry about it. Think of it as rust protection.
