Front End Noise @ 35+ Help!
Ok heres the breakdown. Gf has an 00 grand 4.7 with full time 4wd. There is no part time option. In the past week she said the front end was shaking at 35mph. I have recently replaced the driver cv shaft... About 2 months ago, and the front bearing seemed o-k but not perfect so I am thinking possibly this? I thought they made hum not a vibrating shaking noise...
My next suspect is on Sunday we were fishing and turning around trying to back up in reverse with back tires in mud front tires on pavement... the back wheels were spinning... How is this possible in full time 4wd?? imo it HAS to be t-case right? what else could it be? Could I have put the wrong CV shaft in? as I got both sides and didn't do passenger due to it was wrong one. It went in but it was about 2 inches longer then original so I inspected old it seemed fine threw it back in.. Could the new one had too many splines? It wouldn't go in would it? It slid right in... I only ask because I only have 1 day this week and having somewhere to look directly would be great
I thank anyone who responds and helps me out. The 4wd isn't necessary for RIGHT now but if its broken I want to address it asap. More so the noise is worrying me.

shaking at just 35 or 35 and higher? and does the noise happen with the shaking or are they different problems? when does the noise occur? and from where? (accurate guess)
the wheels can spin because you don't have a locker/LSD your front wheels were probably pulling just not enough to get you moving yet.

So you feel the 4wd is ok? and I am going on her description. From what I know the shaking vibrating gets bad up around 30 35 or so. There is no noise really Idk what all your asking its more of a shaking/vibrating going on.

If its "howling" it could be the front end bearings.

Would it cause a binding on sharp turns as well or is that just the full time 4wd showing age? I guess I'll try the bearing and see what happens

Well, if she has the AWD, the viscous coupler is prolly bad if no one has changed the oil in the TC. And you dont just toss a new bearing in and see what happens. It has to be setup extremely accurately.

Correct, there is no VC in a WJ. What do you mean there is no part time. All transfer cases can be placed into Low position, w/ front & rear locked together.

OK guys. I went to Advanced after 3 hours last night trying to figure out where I went wront.. It was 1 inch too short.. The CV shaft was marked as a FullTime shaft. She has all time 4wd... BUT A part time cv is what was the correct CV shaft... Completely baffled on this finding but I replaced the wheel bearing, put the new CV shaft in. The front wheels weren't connected via too short shaft. Now she has 4wd, no noise, no whining.. I even got a second fulltime shaft only again to find it TOO SHORT
SO if you go to advanced with fulltime 4wd and the cv's too short.. Humor yourself by getting part time.. Everything lines up perfectly.. How? I have no idea. But it does. I triple checked I had right year, model, engine.. Everything. Anyone got an idea how a part time diff is in a fulltime jeep? Cause it is, unless advanced computer system is f'd up.

I'm guessing they gave you the wrong stuff. A d30 is a d30. I suppose i've never measured it, but i find it hard to believe that a WJ full time vs. part time have different front axles? I guess i'll be corrected if i'm wrong though..

hmmm could it be based on your carrier? like the WJs with LSDs (mine) have a different carrier which might need a different shaft????

I dunno but the 4wd works great now and still a small bindup but I think its because its all new cv u hear a lil hum but its probably not broken in after only 35 miles of driving. car def feels much better and shes happy. I cannot believe Advance screwed it up but I verified the diff is a D30. Nothing was changed and the specs are the same. Maybe its the difference between the Tcase like she has thats full time 4wd and the one that has full time part time and low... I know that the thing excists maybe select trac? I can't remember what its called. I been thinkin I bet he gave me that bull****
