Flex joint for A-arm bushing?

UPDATE BELOW

Does anyone make a flex joint like RE, Ballistic or Currie to replace the A-arm body bushings?

Something like this may work. I know a few have used this similar piece in the front control arm bushing locations.

looks tempting, I wonder how the WJ would ride with johnny joints in place of the rubber. I have had to replace my rubber body side bushings once already on my IRO A-arm and next time around I would like to use something that will last haha.

need to get specs on the stock bushing, they are a pain in the *** to press in and out

Thats what I was thinking too but I doubt its the right size...

My rubber bushing from IRO is way too soft as well. I just emailed them and asked if they considered making a flex joint insert....

Merc - unfortunately, this will not work without much fabrication. By that point, it may be more cost-effective to source a new a-arm.

There have been some complaints about IRO's house brand flex joint. You may want to consider a higher quality joint such as currie, ballistic, or summit machine.

Endless Mtn Fab's adjustable a-arm is built with 3 flex joints (Ballistic joints were used in the prototype), and I recall no ill effects of the "solid" joints vs the rubber counterpart. The flex joint does have some cushion -- it's not all metal on metal.

SO is there no flex joint that has same dimensions as the factory bushing ? that seems a little hard to believe... but if that is the case

"We built a concept and determined that it transmitted too much road noise and vibration into the body."

There is for say, a standard upper control arm bushing. However, my understanding of the question was to replace a factory bushing on the a-arm.

That is IRO's take, and I'm offering you my personal experience. Obviously, this is subjective to the user, so you may agree with IRO or you may not. While IRO and other vendors make some nice products for the WJ crowd, I, for one, have learned to take vendor's research, marketing and advice with a grain of salt. My opinion, of course.

that was the question... replace factory sized upper body side control arm bushing in the rear. which is same size that IRO uses for their A arm, so a factory sized bushing is what we need.

I have heard that it would translate a lot of noise, but I think itd be worth a try if the price was right.

I have the dimensions. I sent an email to Summit Machine, Ballistic and Currie to see if they make any bushings that can be pressed in the factory a-arm.

Dimension A O.D. : 1.97"
Dimension B I.D. : .5"
Dimension C Length : 2.8"
Dimension D Length : 1.74"
Dimension E Length : .35"

I quickly received an email from Summit Machine. They have 2" diameter flex joints which may need some weld washers to get the right length. Do you guys think that will be able to be pressed in the a-arm even though the factory size bushing is only 1.97" diameter?

As long as the outside is solid, it's a definite maybe. The A-arm is sheet metal, and the open seam is inside the bushing hole.

Merc1973 subtract 1.970" from 2.000" and you will know this is impossible. The hole is roughly 1/32" smaller than the OD of Summits flex joint. Just for reference press fits vary depending on many, many factors. Press fit in sheet metal is not something I have had to deal with many times. But I would guess the hole in the A arm is around 1.9685 - 1.969". If I ever have an OEM A arm in my hand with one of the bushings out I will inside mike the hole and post the diameter.

That is not the only problem, even if the flex joint body was turned down to 1.970" the body of the Summit flex joint (dimension D) in your diagram is only 1.5" long. What makes this a problem besides being to short the set screw for locking the spanner ring would not be where you could get at it unless you could match drill a hole in the pressed fit area or something like that. You would also need another hole drilled in the A arm so you could screw in the grease fitting. That hole would have to be big enough for the end of a grease gun or it would need to be plumbed with a pipe fitting. Below is Summits flex joint dimensions. Note that the 2" Summit joint bore is .375".
