Fix your OEM Disc changer in less than 5 min

I was quite annoyed that my CD changer never worked correctly. I noticed it would feed the CD's into the player, but immediately shoot them back out into the tray without trying to read them. So my guess was for some reason it wasn't seeing the CD's being loaded into the player. So I tore mine out to get a closer look. The CD changer uses two optical lens/eyes to see if a CD has been loaded into the player. Just clean these and your done. It is not necessary to remove your CD changer to do this. Just reach in there with a cotton swab with some lens cleaner, and that's it.

PIC 1 - the green chip here holds the two sensors
PIC 2 - you can easily reach them without removing the changer.

I will give it a try. Mine has been acting up. Gives me disc errors when trying to use it.

do you have to use lens cleaner or can you use a little window cleaner on a swab? sorry... not too electrical savvy

Nice catch. Sold mine though and put an ipod adaptor in place of the cd changer chord on my head unit. Now crystal clear sound from my ipod.

Cool, I'll have to try that, mine only reads about 1/2 the CD's I put in there.

I always get "Error" on the radio display. It only loads CD's about 25% of the time. I am going to try this as well.

Mine is still hit and miss on it working. It was worth a try though. I will probably go to a dealer and get a refurbished unit. Last I knew they were around $200.00.

Yep, once the eye is covered in dirt and dust it needs to be cleaned. Used to run into the problem all the time with CD drives in computers that were in machine shops and other dirty environments. Just takes a couple of seconds with some alcohol on a Q-tip...

Reviving an old thread, I hope this is ok. I'm wondering if any others have tried this and have had good results. That is using a Qtip and cleaning the optical eye that determines a CD is loaded. Not the read Optical.
