Fan Relay, How Do I Change This?
Last night I came home, and the radiator fan on my 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited wouldn't turn off. After 30 mins or so, I pulled the fuse.
This morning I replaced the fuse, started up the Jeep, and now I'm having the opposite problem, the fan won't come on. I've read several threads, and it looks like I'm going to be spending Labor Day changing the Fan Relay. My auto-repair knowledge is fairly limited, so if someone could point me to a thread or tutorial on how to change out a fan relay, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, -Tim

Thanks for the replies!
StokedWJ, that link is exactly what I'm looking for. Now that I have a visual, I'm ready to go. I'm planning on cutting the plastic with a rotary tool, does anybody have recommendations for me? I really don't want to hit anything important. |

If you cut the plastic under the headlight, just don't go too deep... there's nothing in that little box other than the relay itself, if I recall.
Use a rotary too with a cord! All I have is a battery powered one and it was a pain because it just doesn't have enough torque.

Don't replace that stupid relay! Get a mechanical fan from a 98 grand cherokee!
I replaced that $65 part twice by removing the passenger side headlight then using a dremel to cut down through the plastic. Removibg the bumper cover and bumper is not worth it. Just get the blades and cowel from a 98 like I said. It fits and that is one less poorly made part to worry about. |

I bought the OEM part for $38?? I think a few years ago on Fleabay. I know it was less then $40. Not hard to do. Make sure you use plenty of heat sink compound on the bottom surface of the module.

wish i could help ya bud, my wj has the fan thats run by the power steering, so i have experience with this. i'm willing to bet that the positive wire is staying "hot" and therefore it kept running... now you changed the fuse and have the opposite problem is boggling my mind

Really though, if this one fries too, switch to the mechanical fan. I have no regrets.

I don't believe a mechanical fan will 'do it all.' My 4.0 has both and if the mechanical fan was perfect I'd never hear the e-fan? Plus it comes on as soon as the a/c goes on?

Is the fan attatched to the threads on the engine? Both? Really?

Yes, both... The mechanical fan is attached to a stud in/on the water pump pulley, it is operated by a thermal viscous coupling --->>> fancy term for little spring winding on the front. lol!
Anyway, it appears there's 3 different setups. 1) just an e-fan 2) e-fan and mech fan 3) mech fan only However... #3 appears to be the "wits-end" And not likely Chrysler's intention for 'proper' cooling. I say this because they offered the e-fan on every 4.0 WJ, the mechanical fan was added when a tow package was added to list of options. Again I worry about the #3 option because if it worked, my e-fan should never come on. |

the 'e-fan' as u call it is actually called the A/C Condenser Cooling Fan and should only come on when u turn on your a/c. like the fan that blows hot air out of the back of a home a/c unit. the mechanical fan is there to cool the engine and the 'e-fan' is there to cool the condenser and prob help out the mechanical fan when the a/c is on. it may be programmed to come on when the a/c isn't on if the mechanical fan isn't doing the job but really i don't think the jeep engineers would have put that much thought into it. my 01 limited has the 4.0L tow package and just the mechanical fan. i wish it had the 'e-fan' too cause it can get SLIGHTLY hotter than normal in Boston traffic on a very hot day with the a/c on. if i was just your average-joe-car-owner i would never notice it and never car about it.
