Disabling the AWD

Can ya disable the AWD by simply pulling a fuse? I like the idea of the AWD in lousy weather, but when it's nice......? Most of my driving is commuting on the highway. Would I get better mileage if the AWD was disabled?

No. The 247 acts like limited slip, if you lose rear traction, transfer case sends power to front wheels.

No, its mechanical not electrical. Also, you would not see any MPG gains as we do not have manually locking hubs, so as the tires spin, the axles spin, the drive shaft spins, the transfer case spins. You still have all the same parts spinning as you would in 4wd thus the same amount of friction. Only difference is where the torque is being applied.

You'll get the best mileage pulling the 20A fuse from position 24. This will change your Jeep from AWD to NWD.

Thanks for the replies. It's my 2nd Jeep, the 1st was a 2004 Liberty, so I have very little background on these things.

In AlumaDoo's defense, I'm almost positive it can be done on later model GC's. I've heard people talk about it and I've seen an SRT8 WK with a switch wired into the fuse box to disable the AWD. These guys reprogrammed their TCM to have a "burnout" mode.

But no, on the WJ getting a 242 or dropping the front DS are your only options.

On the Jeep:Hot intake, 52mm TB, Summit 8mm wires, catch can, 703s, insulated fuel rails, indexed Champions, Bilstein 4600s, Eibach lowering springs, Moog SS, Ironman mounts, Lotek 2GP, lots of gauges, sparkly paint.
In the garage: M1 4bbl
In the works: Addco/Hellwig sway bars, nitrous, full polly bushings, full exhaust, data logging, billet UD pulleys

Yeah those new SRT's are all electrical based. I love that the WJ is still mechanical, I'd hate to have a button change my driving modes!
