Hello all. My wife's 01 with the 4.7 is losing coolant somewhere. For about the last year it like this. The radiator blew up on Thanksgiving. After I replaced that I figured all was well kinda stopped paying attention to it. Well last night when she got home she said it was getting hit so I took a look. It was really low on coolant so I filled it up ,but I have seen any puddles or spots from it leaking. I Change my own oil and its clean no milky look. Where should I start looking? Thank you very much
Everywhere. I'd re-check all places I had to take apart to do the radiator. All the hoses to the block and heater core. Check connections to the coolant reservoir. Make sure it isn't cracked. Make sure your radiator cap is good. You should have replaced it and the thermostat when you changed out the radiator. Put some cardboard under the Jeep at night after you park it. Look for markes on it from the coolant. Another thing. You might not even have a leak. Did you burp the system after refilling it? If all else fails. Take it to a shop and have a pressure test done.
I don't know where you live at, but if there is an oreilly auto parts or something there that rents tools you can borrow a coolant system pressure tester. That's what I did on mine and found that I had not one but FOUR leaks...all just loose clamps. They are surprisingly easy to use, and make the coolant flow out of leaks just as if the vehicle was running. Take a look!!!
Watch your exhaust. It might be going out the tail pipe and still not even touch your oil. Thankfully my WJ burns oil, not coolant, but I have had issues with it in the past.
I've got the same thing going on. I think I've finally figured it out -- it seems there is plastic molding flashing on the new radiator's upper hose connection. It's leaking a very little under the hose and it's not possible to tighten enough. Coolant is dribbling down the radiator onto the bottom of the radiator. Looks like I need to remove the upper hose and scrape some of that flashing away so the hose will seal better. I plan on doing it this weekend. Check if yours is doing the same thing.
I put the new radiator in on Thanksgiving and it was almost empty last week thank you for all the replies I'm going to try and do a pressure test this week end. Thank you
