clunking in 4lo

2000 v8 quadradrive. Went wheelin today, put it in 4lo to go up a slippery steep slope and then some really loud clunking came from what i believe was the transfer case. Any ideas? thanks in advance

Is there a way to check that without taking off the cover. I just changed the transfer case fluid about 2 months ago.
