CB Radio: Mount on top of Dash?

Im getting ready to install a CB radio soon. I have read through lots of write ups and found lots of good information on here, but I was thinking of mounting the radio on top of the dash in the center. I dont use this space for anything esle anyway.

What are your thoughts on mounting it up there? The only problem I see is that the dash panel is soft, so Im not sure how secure it would be mounted.

Thanks for your help!

I had mine mounted on there for a while. I drilled through the dash to mount it. You probably don't want to put holes in the dash. You could build a base of wood or similar material and use double sided tape to hold it to the dash. I went a different route when I got tired of it bolted to the dash. Probably further than you want to go though.

I mounted mine on the left side by the wheel. I'm 6'4" and I don't hit it getting in or out.

Yes that 1st post is more modification than I would want to do.

The 2nd post wouldn't work, as Im tall and would hit my knees on it.

I'll take a pic tonight to show the room that I have if you'd like?

I was going to mount it in the same location on the dash as you are asking about, but I was worried about the sun shining on it. Wasn't sure if it would get too hot. It was also much easier to run the wires where I mounted it.

Ill take a better look at the location on the drivers side tonight. I still think it would hinder my leg room especially on longer trips, as I like to put my leg up against the door.

Derekmac, is that one of them there new-fangled-kind 23-channel CB radios I've heard about?

Seriously I love it man, looks like a classic. Cool. I find the older radios have better speakers, more volume, etc. I've got an old GE that will hopefully make it into my WJ if I can find a place to fit it.

Pete

That it is Pete!! Didn't you know that 23 channel radios are the new 40 channel? LOL!! My mother stopped using it in the 70's, so that tells you how old it is! It works great though, nice and clear and loud.

I found a way to mout mine above, just behind the evic. Ran wiring from back of evic (made a small notch in the headliner) down to the front pillar, antenna cable to the back, and the power and pa speaker wireunder the dash etc. from there. Have to lean back to see the front, but it's not that I need to continually change settings on it all the time. Works well. Only other alternative was to put it in the dash with the headunit, and run a secondary face I could get for the scanner. This was definitely cheaper.
