A/C turns on when it feels like it

Anybody have any idea why my air conditioner will come on randomly? Every once in a while I'll glance down and notice the orange light of the air conditioner glowing. It's not too much of a problem except that it turn on when it's 30 degrees out. Also my Overland gets a miserable 13.5 mpg on the highway and having the a/c on probably doesn't help. I think either there's a loose wire somewhere or that the I/R sensor is making it come on.

Are you using the automatic climate controls? When my blend knob is set to Auto, it will sometimes turn on the AC when I don't think I need it. I have to switch the blend knob to one of the manual settings before it will let me turn it off.

I guess it could be set to Auto, I thought it was set to Lo and still did it. I'll have to pay better attention and follow up. Thanks for your reply.
