Building a bumper

Well I have decided to build me own bumper.

Here are the beginnings of it. It is the basic frame waiting on the tire swing pieces to come then I am going to box it all in with 12 ga steel.

will add more as I progress, waiting on the kit now.

I think the bumper is done, will take it off, add a few welds from the back side, weld up all the seams and the grind and paint.

I also think I am going to order a CO2 tank bracket and mount it on the drivers side for carrying my CO2 tank.

Add a cross bar that fits really tight and nice between the top of the receiver and the bottom of the horizontal bars I welded to the side of the hitch receiver mounting plats. I think it will nicely add to the strength, also may add a couple of verticals between it and the main cross piece once it is off for finishing.

Hopefully will be able to finish it up over holiday closure at work, then it is clayton time.

you got anymore pictures of yours on how you finished it? I am thinking of laying a 12 ga sheet to make a tray, in fact I have it cut already on top to clean the part up and I am going to bring some supports down from the front edge that follow the old wheel well and skin that in 12 ga as well to protect the emissions crap.

My kit has shipped for the tire swing so once it gets here I will put another day into it and get the swing mounted then start skinning it.

Hmmm...I will wait to see how it progresses before I pass judgment, but I do have to question the materials. Is that 1x2 on the sides and 2x2 across the back? Did you get it for free? Just seems that you will have a good bit of extra work involved using that vs. 2x4 box like LA did. Also I don't know that you'll be able to get rid of the visual line where the pieces join. Also 12g seems really light for anything that might see a tree or rock.

they were out of 2 x 4 at the local metal place and did not know when they would have any in.

I plan on skinning it all so the 12 ga will cover the seems if all works out. will put some braces behind the skin as well, thought about 11 ga or a little heavier but trying to minimize a little weight.

10-4 looking forward to seeing the progress. If you don't mind, could you post up a height measurement on the a to z spindle when it comes in? I wanna add a tire carrier to mine in the future and I'd like to fit it under the tail light section.

i went with 2x6x3/16...very heavy bumper i wanted 1/8" for the sides but my steel place didnt have it at the time...heres some more pics:

originally i made the spindle too much towards the center and my tire would hit the hatch when opening it so i moved it over another 2 inches...

it is 1.5" in diameter where it welds in and 5 1/4" tall for the that part, entire length is ten inches.

should I go with just the 2x2 for the swing or should I double it up to make a 4 x2 like the main support for the bumper?
