Question Brakes locking up

I've got the WJ at the shop, but want suggestions as to what the issue may be so that they don't throw something crazy at me that really isn't the fix.
Everything was going good, til we stopped at a redlight. Heard what sounded like a flat, but no trouble stopping. Got thru the light and pulled over. No flat, but could smell the brakes. He tried to go forward and the passenger tire didn't roll, reversed and was fine. We started home again, thankfully only a couple miles away. At the next light, he slowly pressed the brake pedal and this time the thump thump started and he turned into a gas station. All of a sudden the brakes locked up, screeching the tire. Reverse, then fwd and all was good. We decided to cripple it another mile to the fix it place. Thankfully, he only had to use the brakes one more time.
When we got to the auto shop, he noticed some metal shavings laying on the inside of the rim. Kinda hard to see anything else, since it was so dark. Only good thing is that the monsoon had stopped only 15 minutes before so the walk a few blocks home wasn't that bad.

Kinda sounds like a caliper but I'm not sure under what conditions they can lock up then release when going in reverse.

I ended up with a red hot glowing rotor after my rear driver side seized up and didn't let go. Pretty easy fix but can get pricey if you do them in pairs with new rotors & pads. Definitely a DIY type job though to save on labor.

sounds like either a disc rotor or caliper has gone faulty.
I would guess your looking having caliper, disk rotor and pads replaced.

sounds like one of the slide pins has come loose or snapped on the calliper. when you brake the calliper will twist and lock when you reverse it gets pushed back straight.

Hey CarlJH, give yourself a pat on the back! Just got off the phone with the shop and they said that a bolt was missing out of the caliper. He's got his tech looking for a new bolt now. Easy fix , but hour labor as long as they don't find anything else wrong after he puts the bolt back in.
Thanks all!!
