anyone have a problem with the CD changer?

I've got a 99 GC and the changer wouldn't read a few of the disks since I bought the car used, now it won't read any CD's. It just says "Err".

Please let me know if anyone has solved this problem. Thanks.

CD cartridge failing for me too

I've got the same problem in my 99 WJ, but only on hot days. I haven't figured it out yet. I'm watching this thread for good replies.

BTT for you.

I have a 99 JGC with a factory 10 disc changer. The cds will tend to skip after they've been in the changer for about a week or so. Almost as if they are dirty. I can remove them, put them in a different cd player and they are fine. Does anyone know who makes the 10 disc changer in case I may want to replace it? It looks like a Kenwood.

i would suggest finding a cd head cleaner. especially if it was used, you dont know what was going on in the truck before you got the thing

Cool

I had that problem last summer on real hot days. I was in Yosemite National Park cruising around listening to the CDs and it keep skipping and the 'Err" would come. I thought it from the hilly drive that was causing it to skip, but wasn't sure. It continued to skip, especaily on hot ones. After dealing with it for about a month. I brought it to the Dealer and had it fixed( I was still under warranty).

I haven't use it that much this summer, but no problems since they fixed it.

Thanks for the additional info.

Did the dealer give you any idea what was causing it? Was their solution to replace something or adjust something? Any notations on the reciept? I'm out of warranty. I haven't tried the cleaner yet.

If you take it wheeling a lot, or just drive rough you can knock the laser off track, meaningit wont read properly. This could be the problem. First I'd try to clean it and if that didn't work, then I buy a new one.

Cool

I'll take a look for the reciept, don't know if I still have it. I think I remember it saying something like "the tray was replaced" not sure though. Not sure what the "tray" is either.

I do remember it was taken out by the dealer and sent to a service shop.

I know this is probably obvious, but make sure the discs are not "upside down" withing the magazine. Someone wrote in awhile back with the "Err" problem and ended up he was putting the CDR's in the tray upside down. He was using non-labeled silver discs which almost look the same on both sides.

The "cleaning" CDs are pretty much worthless and I would not recommend them. How can they possibly clean the laser lens?

If you have mechanical experience, I'd pull the unit and take it apart. You can then used canned air to clean out the inside of the unit and lens, and clean the lens with a cottom swab. I would also hook it back up while apart and watch what happens when you try to play a disc, see if it is at least trying to spin. I'd use a factory CD for the testing and CDR's can be fussy sometimes.

If you know anyone else locally that owns a Jeep with the same changer they are very easy to swap out momentarily which would tell you for certain if it's your changer with the problem (vs bad radio/PCI signal for example). I would try switching magazines first, although these usually don't go bad.

I believe Mitsubishi makes the changer for Jeep.

hi this is probably not the same problem but i have a 96 GC and it will not read CD's burned on my friends computer. when i try the "err" thing pops up and it spits it back out. what's weird is CD's burned on my computer will play. it's never given me any trouble besides that. don't think it's ever skipped, even on the roughest trail.
