Another Drive Shaft Question

I have a 2000 gc with a 2" BB and upcountry suspension. I'm having the all to familiar grinding noise when i'm in 4wd. After doing alot of research on it, I first needed to find out what kind of drive shaft joints I had since the double cardan mod sounded like something I wanted to do.

Unfortunately... I discovered I had rzeppa joints on both ends

But as I was checking things out, I noticed that the boots seemed undamaged and there was no play in anything. Now what...

I did notice alot of caked on fluid under the front differential right by the drive shaft. Could this be my problem? What do you good and knowledgeable people think?

Here are some pics...

The top picture shows the joint is knackered. You can see the torn rubber that should go right up to the shaft. Mine looked like that when it went and has a constant whine with the odd rumble. New shaft time. Go double cardan if you can....having said that I didnt and the new one was cheap enough not to worry about. 10,000 miles and going strong at about 2.5 inch of lift. About 110 on Ebay (about $180).

You also need to get that pinion seal done and keep a check on the oil level until you do.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got yourself an electrical problem!

If I was to go junkyard shopping, what shafts would be compatible for a double cardan? I also see some double cardan on ebay for a reasonable price but they're for a ZJ. Would that work?

from what ive read yes the zj would work, but you are going to need the slip yokes i believe in order to use a double cardan shaft

Ok, I also hear alot about the length of the shaft. Is there a standard I should be looking for?

i would replace that pinon seal to. If you have never done one try to find a wright up. you will need a torque dial indicator tool and a new crush washer.

I found a double cardan shaft but it came from a 247. Would this work for me since I have a 242? I know I would need to get the yokes but i'm more concerned with the length.

Ok so I've been doing a lot of research and went ahead with the double cardan ds that came from a 2004 gc with a 4.7 and 247. It's my understanding that it should be compatible. The next thing is to get the yokes for both the axle and tc side. Now what should I look for??

For the yokes, Nick (kolak) is your man. I got four yokes from him for my WJ's.
