Just bought a used 99 WJ with the 4.0 6 cylinder. 201K, looked good on the outside, seemed to run well. Bought it for a 2.5 week trip that we planned on taking to Arches, Canyonlands and Death Valley. $1800...can't beat the price. Needed new tires, OK. Tried smogging it (seller is actually responsible, so I've got to talk with him about costs). Had to replace the transmission solenoid ($700) non-listed catalytic converter ($300) and it failed due to high NOx...replaced fuel filter, cleaned out pump unit, ran Seafoam cleaner through it; went to the mechanic to smog it but they said it needed more running time to reset the monitors. Ran out of time and went on our vacation...so far, have put 4,000 miles on it since we bought it a month ago. No oil burning, ran like a champ through 122 degree Death Valley heat, 110 degrees in Moab and offroad trips up (not down) Long Canyon in Moab and Titus Canyon in Death Valley. Totally impressed with the engine and drivetrain. Driver's door panel came off in my hands at Titus Canyon. Clips all broke, but noted that both doors were missing the torx screw securing the panel to the door...WTF?
Now at the end of the trip and debating whether to keep or sell. Still needs to pass the smog...if it doesn't, will have to pursue the seller. But....4,000 miles in a week of 100-120 degree heat.
With 205,000 miles, burns less oil than my 2006 Jetta. What a champ!
