Wj '99 Blown motor... what years will fit

I'm sure it has been asked a 100 times, and if there is a link already here just point me to it... Jeep in question is a '99 Grand with a 4.0. What models and years are compatable? Are they direct bolt in or will I have to swap brackets around etc.? Any help is appreciated, Thanks.

Any wrangler with coil packs. NO CHEROKEES OR ZJs. The ac mounts and engine mounts are different. The ac is at on the bottom drivers side in WJs and on the top passengers side in XJs, and ZJs. Try to get a newer 4.0 like 03-04 WJs and 03-06 TJs. This is when they fixed the heads so they don't crack anymore. If you open the oil fill cap and look down it you will see letters stamped in it. Another problem with the older coil pack engines is the piston skirts break off and throw the piston balance off which causes it to throw a rod. I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee that threw a rod and I had an extra 4.0 in the garage but it had a distributor. I tried and tried to find a way to get it to fit but it would cost less to just get an 03-06 4.0. If it has a distributor it will not work. Another thing you could do if you can only find 99-02 4.0s WITH COIL PACKS is get all new pistons from a newer 4.0 and the new head too. That's what I did. They may be bullet-proof from the outside but they sure know how to self destruct from the inside.

Awesome info, that's what I was looking for. I found a 99 with a rebuilt motor that got t-boned. He documentation showing it's only got 1600 miles. I am gonna look at the build sheet to see what they did to it when they rebuilt it. Might be an option if the price is right. Thanks again.
