So i just recently purchased Jk Rubi take off's, i have a 2001 WJ laredo. now i was planning on a BB & tons o' trimming. i have since come to my senses... so I havent seen it yet but i have this buddy who i grew up with and bought an 04 WJ shortly after i did and i always told him id lift mine first. Well cuz ive been deployed with the army to shoot taliban, he beat me to it. 4 inch rough country and 285/75/16 i like i said i havent seen it yet but im guessing he had some serious rubbing issues. im not sure if he got the standard RC lift or x series RC lift. i have heard from other members that rough country isnt that great of a lift for our WJ's now my question is he beat me to lifting his, how do i beat him by having a better lift?
as immature as that sounds, id like to have a nicer riding WJ. at least i can beat him to having better lift/tire not just off the shelf rough country.
So far im setting aside about $800 for the lift, and all labor to be done by me. now my setup would include Rubi take off's 255/75/17 (already have) The lift im leaning towards is IRO 3" with adjustable track bar upgrade and bilstien 5125 upgrade. does anyone have any thoughts on this combo,is the 5150's worth the extra $100 over the 5125's? functionality? it will be mostly driven on the road by my wife but with the ocasional hunting fishing and towing Yfz 450's to the pit/trails. there will be a few times the swaybars get disco'd and letting the wife and myself play around on some trails too.
any one have any ideas on different lifts which ride better than the rough country? or any RC customers recomend their lift to another member?
thanks for the thoughts:tea:
Go with the 4" Zone. I don't have personal experience but that would be my first choice for a 4" short arm. Tons of good reviews on here about the zone kit and its right in your budget range. If you have the money however, the IRO 4" long arm kit is something to think about.
I like my Rc lift now that the clunks are gone. RC told me they had some bad JJ on there control arms that wore out fast, they replaced mine for free and all is well so far. I have great flex and the ride is pretty good.
I know I talked to RC a few times about my clunks, squeaks, etc. and they told me they had no known issues as such with their kit. Maybe it has to due with I got their "RCX" flex kit when it first came out and not too many ppl had complained about it yet....dunno but I know my kit clunked and what not right out of the box!! I will try and call them again to see if I can get some new LCA's but since I purchased it a while back who knows....and yes if you add some bilstiens to the mix the kit is ok as far as ride quality goes, offroad it works just fine, no complaints on the improved capabilities it adds to your WJ
I got my Zone 4" installed 2 weeks ago and really like the quality of it. It's a very complete kit for the $ ($700). Only has fixed control arms though, so if you feel you may need adjustable ones, you can also look into IRO. They sell a similar lift for similar $$ but the adjustable control arms are sold separately.
I got just about 4" lift out of my Zone, and with 265/75/16s, I think that's about as big as I'd go without a good amount of trimming. I'll probably still do minor trimming once I take it out to see where it rubs.
tizzdizz how's the clearance with those duratracs and the 4" lift? Would you need to do any trimming if you were to flex out the suspension? Also any spacers to run those tires? I want to get an IRO 4" with the exact same tires and I have the same timberland rims.
Clearance appears to be good. I'm not running spacers at the moment, but I may down the road if it appears the stock wheels have too much backspacing. I haven't really driven it enough yet as I've only had it on for a couple weeks. No wheeling or flexing yet, but I will be taking it out the weekend after next so I can get it dialed in. I'm sure some minimal trimming will be necessary, but there's enough clearance that it won't be noticeable. The only time it rubs during normal driving is at full lock, which I'm used to anyway. Even then, it's not bad at all.
Lock to lock rubbing would probably be cured with different back spacing in the rims, however it wouldn't solve it during flex. Please let me know how it goes when you go wheeling.
My 265/75/16 dura tracs rubbed way to much if you drive it off road, I do have the soft 8's so my back spacing is different than stock. I trimmed a lot off the front.
Seeing that you said you want to have the nicer riding WJ, either go with long arms or a shorter lift. A 4" short arm lift is going to have a harsh ride regardless of who makes it. Upper end monotube shocks help, but only so much.
Rubicon takeoffs will fit with with 3" of lift and minor trimming.
Remember, bumpstops are your friend if you don't want to trim alot.
Hunt and fish...... what do you think of your IRO and doetsch tech's? i heard this combo to be rather harsh ride? i have also heard to provide more than 3 inches of lift, have you found this to be true? do you think id have issues with 32's vs. your 245's?
thanks all for your input, i havent quite looked into zone kits yet. idk maybe its me but they just seem like a bottom line kit. where im from everyone has heard of rough contry, jeepers have all heard of IRO and Rustys. but never zone...
sinbad85... which RC did you purchase? i also see you have bilsteins as well, how does that handle with that combo? would you recomend it?
now if i could convince the wife i need another few hundred for a lift, rustys 4.5" does anyone have any first hand experience with this kit. their writeup on their website seems to include everything except tools for the install.
anyone?
Why are adjustable control arms so necessary over fixed arms? Is it just for ride comfort? And would using aftermarket fixed control arms over stock arms even make a difference? I was going to go with either the IRO 4" or zone 4" kit just because i've only heard good things about them while i've heard mixed opinions with the RCX 4".
Fixed aftermarket arms are usually longer (and possibly stronger?) than stock ones. The point is to re-center your wheel in the middle of the wheel well. Adjustable control arms allow you to adjust your caster in case you have wobbles or other steering issues. Also, having that adjustability can allow you to dial in your driveline angles so you don't end up with a driveline hum or vibration.
