4 hi vs 4 lo

When i am in 4 wheel all time i only have rear wheel drive. I get nothing from the front. Last night i got stuck in the driveway. just for hahas i tried 4 lo and drove my self right out no problems at all. It seemed like i had all four wheels moving.

How can i have 4 wheel in 4 lo but only 2 wheel in 4 hi??

Your progressive coupler is shot. 4 hi uses a coupler, essentially clutch packs, to send power to the front when there is a speed difference between front and rear. 4 lo bypasses that coupler and physically locks the front and rear drive shafts together. Search transfer case swap on here, there are tons of threads on it.

Sent from inside my dinosoar head.

Which drive system do you have? The 147 and 247 transfer cases will transfer power to the axle with the most traction.
The 242 transfer case has a differential which lets the power go the axle with the LEAST traction, so if you have this TC in 4hi, and the rear is slipping, the front will not drive.

The 242 locks both the front and rear axles in 4 Part-Time. You're thinking of the 4 Full-Time mode.

I found the same thing a few months ago. I have a 2001 JGC with a 247j TC I drove up the hill after a fresh snowfall and got stuck, front wheels were not turning. Switched to 4-Lo and took off no problem.

Ended up rebuilding the TC cost me about $950 at the Trans shop. Now I have 4-All-time and 4-Lo

The clutches in the viscous coupler came out when they drained the oil...

If it has the 249, I wouldn't. The 247 is a better case than the 249 IMO, but the best option is the 242HD available in V8 WJ's (around 02-03 iirc).
