I just replaced the real main seal on my '04 4.7 HO due to having the transmission out and it was right there. The original seal was flush with the block and when I installed the new Felpro seal it sits about 1/16" deeper. Does it need to sit flush with the block or will I be ok with it sitting a tad deeper? Just don't want a leak when I have everything assembled.:wink2:
As long as the lip of the seal is on the sealing surface you should be good. You might even be better off as the seal is now on a surface that isn't worn.
Nope seal wasn't leaking. Radiator trans cooler leaked coolant into transmission. Happened earlier this summer, just slow getting things back together.
Radiator physically looks fine, but is the original. Previous owner had the transmission completely rebuilt last year too. Bad luck on my end for sure!
Just to update... I went ahead and reassembled everything with the rear main seated past flush of the block ~1/8". No leaks at all since I put it back together last fall.
