4.0 tick/knock

Hey guys, i changed my oil a few days ago with rotella t5 10w30
I have a really loud tick/knock (i really dont know the difference) and i cant figure out what is wrong. sounds like its either #3 piston, or a rocker on cylinder 3.

Heres a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9tf...ature=youtu.be
Its a lot louder in real life
Just ignore my stupid minecraft videos.. lol

No, its really bad when i first start it, but then it quiets down, but never goes away. it also ticks/knocks faster when i rev it

That was fully warmed up by the way

Piston skirt possibly. I think i hear the telltale low end clunk there.

What year and how many miles?

The EVAP starts at 0:05

Piston Skirt. Get a stethoscope and put it high on the side of the oil pan. I am willing to bet it gets louder.

Good luck. Pretty common with these 4.0's. I did mine at 120k, sounded just like it and it wasn't the evap solenoid. Rebuild or Reman is your best bet. Used motors are almost as much as a reman (unless you can find a smoking hot deal somewhere)

I hope thats really not what it is... my dad says we are junking it if that's whats wrong (its in his name)
The only thing is it never made a sound until i changed the oil, it made no noise at all with crappy Valvoline in it

Could also be a cracked head? Take the oil cap off and shine a flashlight down there. Does it say Tuppy?

That doesn't seem loud enough to me to be the typical piston skirt problem. There are only 900 other vids of that in YT...lol I thought mine was still up but I guess I deleted it. Mine was MUCH louder.

The thing with 4.0's is...the oil pumps in all of the 99-04's sucked. So depending on how worn they are and other factors...it could just be lifters... hard to say.

If it were me I would pull the valve cover and check the rockers. If you find nothing then I would drop the pan and check it for piston skirt.
I will say that when I switched my cherokee to the t5 that it got louder than with Mobil 1.

I say don't worry about it. Unless your burning , leaking oil , overheating or poor performance . If your going to junk it and it still works just drive into the ground. My jeep 4.0 has the same noise and it get 21 mpg and drives well. The noise hasn't gotten louder. Also next time you change your oil use Quaker state defy or rotella they have a lot of zinc which helps protect the engine.

Good luck
