Wj 4.0 motor

need a motor for my 01 wj.cant afford any reman ones and the junk yards want a 1000.00 and up for high mileage ones.i found one a couple towns over that the poster says has 70000. miles on the one he has that was out of a totaled 01 limited. selling with a awd tranny too for under a grand.its not in the car but he still has it after i seen the ad a month and a half ago.says has title too if that means anything.so my question is do i go for it and take the chance or just get rid of my wj.then have to find someone to install it .moneys very tight as on ssdi.

I thought the Limiteds came with 4.7's and also that AWD's only came with 4.7's , not sure. Anyway what is wrong with your motor? Can you not find a reputable garage or machine shop to rebuild it and install for you?

*edit* and my gut tells me somethings probably not right with the motor awd tranny combo if it's still for sale a month and a half later. Seems like that kind of thing would go rather quickly.

I have cancer and on SSDI to so I know what being tight on funds is.
Its all a gamble wish I could help you but you just need to decide if the risk is worth the reward.
Luckily I got to cars one I hate to drive because it hurts my back so bad and my jeep but if worse come to worse I can drive my saturn while I work on my jeep.
Not much you can do just meet the guy in person and see what kind of vibe you get off him might be a good deal.

wife seems to want to go for it and i think i am too. bought my jeep last march with 195000 mi on it and got the summer out of it.i dont need the tranny unless its a select trac so i can try to sell that to get a little money back.and ya ssdi sucks for what they give you for all the years of busting your nads and paying taxes.i just have to find a place to install it,one of my 14yo is in a teck school so ill call his teacher to see if they install.

Wow...sorry to hear about the cancer "losttech" ...be praying for you bro..

KVN4 ...don't know if you have decent set of tools....but the 4.0's pretty easy to work on (assuming your cylinder walls are still okay)... you can get a whole new set of pistons for around $160 ... with new crank bearings / set of lifters ..etc.. total probably be around $500 ...and then you could squeeze another 100K or more out of her.

I would keep looking around. Not saying that is a bad deal, but I got my replacement 4.0 for $500 with only 35000 on it. It might be worth you looking around and seeing if you can find a little better deal and maybe convince them to deliver/help with shipping. You would be surprised at what some people are willing to do.

Sounds like this motor is out of an XJ since its mated to an AW4 trans.

There was a thread on here discussing this same thing not too long ago. I think the OP found out the hard way that an XJ block won't work in the WJ.

Yeah he did find that out and now has to sell it, so make sure you check what he's trying to sell you. You stated rebuilt ones are $5k around you? You can go to any number of national parts stores like NAPA and get a reman longblock with a warranty for less than $2000 plus a core charge you will get back later. If you have a hookup at a tech school for install maybe get a engine delivered right to them there. I'd think you would sleep better knowing you have bought another 200,000 miles.

No it won't work. I can't find the thread I referenced earlier, but the second post on this one has some good info on engine block compatibility:

thanks guys.now have to ponder if to get the one from az like i said the j yards are too much of a risk being with high mileage and costing a couple hundred less than the reman one.
