it gives you an extra 6-8" of foot room if you lay down with your head towards rear hatch and let your feet go where the seat bottoms were. i used to have to take out the bottom seat in my XJ to sleep back there and that's what made me want to figure out how to do it in the dub-j in the first place!

Thanks for the idea guys! Just did mine today and it cost me less than $13 for the wire pins @ Home Depot. I just used a 5/16ths drill bit and left the bracket on the seats for it so it took me about ten minutes for each side.

Did this Monday night. Thanks for the tip! Never know when I'll be camping and my tent just won't cut it (rain, snow, too cold, etc.)
So far the cheapest mod I've done.

I've seen this thread before, and the same mod mentioned in other threads, and still have not done this. It is on the list to do though.

I love this mod!!!! I've been able to haul around so much more stuff on trips!!! And yeah sleeping in the WJ is a nice feature lol. My wife and I took both our Jeeps to a Spring Break Beach run and we used the WJ as our base camp and hotel haha.. It was cheaper to pay the gas vs paying for a hotel room on the beach!!!

You can find those pins at almost any hardware store. Used alot with trailers.

The Home Depot by me had them in the screw section, in the drawers. I had to hunt around a bit as they weren't listed or pictured on the drawer. The ones I got were 5/16 X 2 3/4 and fit perfectly.

Just wanted to let anyone else who might be trying this know that the 5/16" pins did not fit my hinges. I used a cutoff wheel instead of drilling them out and while the factory pin came out fine, the locking pin replacement is way too big. I'll have to drill the holes now or find a smaller diameter locking pin.

^glade you mentioned that. I was going to do this tomorrow and just planed on cutting it out. What size clips fit in the original sized hole?

Looks about like 1/4" should do the trick.

If you follow the OP instructions the 5/16 pin fits perfectly. You need to use a 21/64 drill bit on the pins. Out of all the mods I've done to both my Jeeps I think this one is by far the best!!!!
